Welcome to Show 64 of the CLIP Podcast. Tonight I have for you another multi-modal text set which is a combination of print based, music, media, art based texts, amongst other kinds of text, that focus on a particular topic or issue. What I like most about these text sets is that they provide for us opportunities to think about certain issues in multiple ways and often from multiple perspectives. When we read any text, listen to any song, view any piece of art or film, and so forth , we do so from particular ideological positions, we can’t avoid this because the experiences we’ve had, the discourses or the ways of being, talking, doing that we’ve lived become tools that we use, whether consciously or not when making meaning in the world. So these discourses inform the positions from which we are able to communicate in the world. They also influence the ways in which what we communicate positions others in the world. Text sets therefore better inform our thinking on particular topics or issues because they allow us to read one text against another or to rub one text against another.

In tonight’s episode is Marissa Campos talking about Disrupting Gender Stereotypes.

Andy, my partner and I recently took our 4 year old to Disneyland for somewhat of a family reunion and it was great to meet up with our relatives from the West Coast. To Disney or not to Disney, I know is a question many people have struggled over. Here’s what I think. The perspective from which you enter into any event or experience makes a difference in what you come away with. Not going to Disneyland in and of itself is not critical literacy. The critical piece comes through being able to unpack the hidden ideologies that stem from the world of Disney and therefore not buying into those ideologies. The critical also comes through understanding the position from which you enter into readings of Disney and so forth. It comes from the recognition that the language you encounter is not natural or neutral and that it does particular life work.

Disney background noise…

Andy – Did you hear that?
Vivian – What ?
Andy – That woman over there with her daughter dressed as Cinderella just said “Will you hurry up…you’re not being very princess-like”

Now see what is problematic about what Andy overheard while we were in Disneyland, is the way the woman, caregiver, mother, positioned Disney as an authority on life or the way things should be. Specifically the way girls should be. Disney of course cuts up the world in a particular way.

I doubt, however, if staying away from Disneyland would have disrupted that mother’s problematic representation of what it means to be a girl. So the issue at hand goes beyond to Disney or not to Disney. What do you think? What are some things we can do in schools and at home to disrupt dominant sexist ideologies and discursive practices? Weigh in by leaving a comment on the clip homepage at www.clippodcast.com or by leaving me voice mail at the number listed in the show notes.

To wrap up tonight’s episode, here is Deirdre Flint and Epcot USA.

Epcot USA song…
That was Deirdre Flint and Epcot USA. I hope that Deirdre and I have given you at least a couple of things to think about from a critical literacy perspective.

Until next time…

Greetings CLIP Listeners,

First, we’d like to extend our gratitude to Vivian for giving us the opportunity to share this experience with you all.

My name is Greg McClure and this poemCast attempts to document our class’ transformation from a group of students and a teacher to a community of caring and engaged learners.

The project began as I decided to keep a reflective journal to explore my teaching in an undergraduate course on language and culture in the classroom. I was committed to being brutally honest with myself and determined to examine the biases and stereotypes I was bringing into the classroom. How did these biases interact with my intentions of implementing a critical and engaged pedagogy? How did they limit our potential as a class to connect in true dialogue with one another? While I have never been a journal writer, it became the perfect tool to work through the possible answers to these important questions. The journal acted like a sieve, filtering and sorting my observations and reflections, slowing them down and disentangling them from one another. This process allowed me to recognize both the limits and possibilities of my teaching, giving me the reflective space necessary to begin moving towards a more open and democratic pedagogy.

Throughout the semester I maintained this creative tension between reflection and action and invited the class into the process as well. I was enthused and inspired often by the results in class, but always by the process we were taking. We incorporated a healthy mix of group work, student led discussions of the texts, and frequently used writing as a means to develop and share our individual thoughts on difficult topics like immigration, racism privilege. I constantly tried to facilitate an environment that encouraged sharing individual lived experiences, but in a way that connected us to and enriched our understanding of the course concepts. We engaged in many activities that helped build community and deepen our understanding of each others’ perspectives, often questioning our own in the process. Here, it is important to highlight our initial experience of writing and sharing “I Am” poems. This simple act of exploring our “cultural selves” together was a powerful process and moved our sense of community forward, as folks showed their willingness to be vulnerable and supportive of one another. It was this initial experience that set the direction for the rest of our course and inspired our decision to develop our “We Are” poem and to share it as a poemCast.

Realizing the "insider" nature of “We Are” poems, we struggled to generate something meaningful beyond the limits of our classroom, yet still authentically represent our experiences in the course. Our goal was to create something that reads not so much as a collective profile of our personalities and experiences, but rather a statement of our evolving philosophies on education, learning, and human relationships. We’ve tried to capture the spirit of our classroom here and to document our development as a community of engaged, critical educators. We feel our experience is a testament to the power of dialogue and community building in education. With that we leave you with our poemcast, in hopes that it may ins</itunes:summary>

Show 52

Intro

Hello Everyone,

Yes - I am back after an unexpected absence so thank you to those of you who have hung in there and who have kept subscribed and welcome to those of you who are joining me for the first time.

This is show #52 of the CLIP Podcast!

Bumper from Jeff Roney

Some of you may have heard that I co-organized a Podcamp with Andy from the AndyCast Podcast.

Podcamp EDU held at American University on Dec. 10 focused specifically on intersections between podcasting, new media, and education. It was deliberately a smallish conference of 70 or so people, podcasters and non-podcasters, educators and those interested in education and educational issues.

There were some really great sessions and presenters including Andy Carvin from PBS, Joel Witt from Maryland Zoo TV, Steph Stockman. from NASA and Nick Guzman and Rebeca Logan who founded Red Bloguera, home of the first Spanish language podcast. There were so many amazing presenters and participants.

Weeks after the event, Andy and I continue to find blog posts, twitter tweets and other online conversations regarding the success of PodcampEDU. Nick Guzman referred to the event as a golden opportunity, Chris Brogan and Whitney Hoffman both blogged about PodcampEDU type venues as the future of podcamp. Thank you to all of you who have kept the buzz going. We look forward to seeing you all again next year.

I believe this was the first podcamp with a very specific focus on the ways in which social media technology can be used as tools in educational settings. It was a great opportunity to think about what these technologies can afford teaching and learning and in terms of critical literacy, a great opportunity to think about how social media can be used as tools in our critical literacy work. This podcast, CLIP podcast, is an example of how a social media tool can be used to do critical literacy work. In the case of CLIP, I’m using podcasting as a tool to make accessible critical literacy issues and demonstrations of critical literacy practice. So social media does not constitute critical literacy but social media has vast potential for furthering critical literacy work.

I believe it would be useful for us to think about Lankshear and Knobel’s distinction between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0

They begin by saying that we need not only to think about new technologies but also new ethos, a new way of thinking about and being with new technologies. A Web1.0 Mindset focuses on the question how do I technologize my existing practice? Tools to do this include more traditional websites, Ofoto, or Brittanica Online. A Web2.0 Mindset asks the question what might new technologies afford the work I do? Tools to do this include, podcasting, blogging, flickr and so forth.

So, to shift mindsets we need to first consider what technology can afford the particular work we are doing rather than finding ways to technologize our existing classroom practice. At PodcampEDU we had a collection of presenters who created spaces for participants to engage in this shifting of mindsets if they hadn’t done so already.

Andy and I will begin to start releasing audio of the presentations from Podcamp EDU as soon as possible so keep tabs on that.

Welcome to show 48. Thank you for hanging in there and continuing to listen. This show is so long overdue. Lots of family stuff and work related matters to take care of but finally…here I am.

People used to ask me, when I was a classroom teacher of young children, ‘how do you do it?’ I never thought much of the question, mostly because I never found teaching to be that hard…that is until I stopped teaching young children full time. Now I ask myself the same question. How did I do it? My answer is the same each time. And no, I didn’t do it for the love of the children. Don’t get me wrong, I love working with kids it’s just that use of the phrase ‘for the love of the children’ has been a great way of positioning teachers to work long hours without getting paid overtime and spending their own money on classroom materials and professional development that really ought to be provided by school districts. But I digress…enough of that. Back to my answer… I was saying that whenever I ask myself how I did what I did as a teacher of young children my answer is always the same. I surrounded myself with a group of colleagues, not from my own school but other schools in the area, with whom I did my thinking. We worked to support, and encourage one another. Not too long ago I met an incredible group of teachers in Winnipeg Manitoba who also have supported one another through the ups and downs and the ins and outs of teaching. I was fortunate to be able to spend some time with them talking about critical literacy while we enjoyed a lovely dinner and shared some wine at an incredible restaurant in Winnipeg.

Conversation…

Thanks to Wayne Serebrin, Tracey Douglas, Chris Wigglesworth, Cora Campbell, Denise Murphy, and Tannis Nishibata-Chan whose voices you heard in today’s show and whose voices you will be hearing in upcoming shows, one that focuses on creating spaces for families to engage with critical literacies, and another that focuses on popular culture and everyday text . It was absolutely energizing to be in your company. I can’t wait for us to get together again.

Intro

Once again, I’ll be releasing two shows this week. Today’s show will feature another quotable quote but before sharing that with you I want to invite you to celebrate my 50th show, which seems to have snuck up on me, by sending in e-mail or audio comments regarding what clip has meant to you. You can reach me at clippodcast@gmail.com or leave a voice mail at 206-984-1778. There is a catch here though because my 50th comes up next week! So if you could send your thoughts by Monday, July 2, I’ll be in good shape to put those together.

Bumper

Andy and I recently returned from attending Podcasters Across Borders in Kingston, Ontario. We had an amazing time. I’m so glad to have become part of an incredibly supportive podcasting community. I’ll be posting photos on my Flickr page so you can see for yourself what a terrific time we all had. During his presentation, Neil Gorman used the analogy of podcasters as seeking out new frontiers as in the days of Star Trek , the original episode, to boldly go where no-one has gone before. This week’s quotable quote fits nicely with this line of thinking.

...the more a literacy practice privileges participation over publishing, distributed expertise over centralized expertise, collective intelligence over individual possessive intelligence, collaboration over individuated authorship, dispersion over scarcity, sharing over ownership, experimentation over "normalization", innovation and evolution over stability and fixity, creative-innovative rule breaking over generic purity and policing, relationship over information broadcast, and so on, the more we should regard it as a "new" literacy.

The quote comes from A New Literacies Sampler by Michel Knobel and Colin Lankshear.

Stunning and breathtaking are words I would use to describe some of the work I’ve seen produced by fellow podcasters, and that’s no exageration. Thanks to Mark, Bob, Andrea, and Cat and all the other attendees for an amazing weekend. I look forward to seeing you all next year!

Keep an eye out for my next show where I’ll take you to the Canadian Prairies for a conversation with a group of friends who are exploring critical literacies in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

<itunes:summary>Welcome back. I’ll be releasing a couple of shows back to back this week so keep listening. The other day Kathleen King co-host of Podcast for Teachers with whom I did a session at Podcamp New York sent me an e-mail to touch base, which I very much appreciate, and also to congratulate me on the upcoming 50th episode of CLIP. I’ll have more for you regarding how you might participate in the 50th show in an upcoming episode.

For now, here’s your quotable quote to jump start your day.

"Critical literacy, on the other hand, foregrounds the role of language in establishing and maintaining taken-for-granted, business-as-usual. It closely examines the ways in which language practices carve up the world according to certain socially-valued criteria (and not other sets of criteria); draws attention to inequities; and calls for a rethinking of theories considered "natural" or unassailable."

This quote is from Critical Cyberliteracies:What Young People can Teach us About Reading and Writing the World by Michele Knobel and Colin Lankshear This was a keynote paper presented at the National Council of English Teachers' Assembly for Research Mid-Winter Conference. New York, February 22-24, 2002.

If you have a quote that connects with critical literacy in some way I’d love to hear from you. You can e-mail your text to clippodcast@gmail.com

Or if you are able to call in your quotes that would be even better.
The number to call is 206-984-1778.

<itunes:summary>Natasha, a student in a course on critical literacy that I taught this past spring had a post on her blog titled "quotes to inspire critical literacy..." She said that she tries to pick quotes that have some reference to education or math, the subject she teaches, or some life lesson. She also invited students to bring in quotes and offer them up for class discussion. Inspired by Natasha's post, I decided to try a new segment on CLIP using Quotable Quotes.

Thank you so much to Sonia Nieto for sending the following quote to get this segment started...

CLIP 42 Partial Transcript

Intro

Welcome to show 42 of the CLIP pocast. This show is dedicated to Carol Felderman and the 100%Kids group.

On tonight’s show I focus on critical literacy in a second grade classroom in Virginia. For years, the second grade classes in the school had gone on a trip to the Baltimore Aquarium. It was an excursion children looked forward to as they left first grade and moved into second grade. In fall 2006 this changed as the second graders were told it was too expensive to go on the trip and that they wouldn’t be going. Carol Felderman, a very inspiring and passionate teacher, who you’ve heard from previously on CLIP, had at the time been framing her teaching from a critical literacy perspective so her students were not foreign to problematizing the way things are. As a group they decided to find a way to get the second grade kids to the Baltimore Aquarium. One of the things they first did was to ask for a meeting with the school principal. Encouraged by his openness to their proposals regarding ways to raise funds for the trip, the children moved forward hosting popcorn sales, bingo and pizza nights and so forth. On May 8, 2007, after months of fundraising all the children’s hard work paid off as they boarded a bus to the Baltimore Aquarium.

Following is audio from the children talking about their trip. This audio is part of a podcast that Carol, her second graders and I have been releasing since the beginning of the year. The podcast is 100% Kids a show that focuses on kids affecting change in different ways. Have a listen. I’ll link to the show in the shownotes. Enjoy!

Congratulations second graders and Carol! Your story is a wonderful example of what it means to engage in literacies that have real world effects. I know how hard you worked , week after week, never giving up , always moving forward thinking of new, exciting and fun ways to be able to accomplish what you wanted.

Before I go I want to say thank you to the following people for contributing to the show, participating in the show, commenting on the show or contacting me regarding the show; Carol felderman, will hale, Stephanie wahome, tamara Johnson, Andrew opie, jen clark, marilyn walker, Vicki otten, kris tilley, vida, don burkins, marian, and of course the 100% Kids Group who provided audio for this show.

Show 40 Transcript:
We are 10 shows away from the 50th CLIP. Can you imagine! Welcome to show 40. In this show a special thank you to Nathan Havner for his thoughtful and thought-provoking segment on The Sexualization Of Young Girls In The Media.

My name is Nathan Havner and I teach first grade in a Washington, DC Public School. In Sunday’s Doonesbury a man and a woman sit at the breakfast table and read the newspaper.

Woman: “I give up, why do women have such horrible body image issues? When we’re not tarting up ourselves to look younger, we tart up our daughters to look older. Why is there only one feminine ideal? I’m tired of trying to look like a skinny teenage girl! It’s embarrassing! I want to look my age!”

Man: “Um, Okay, what brought this on?”

Woman: “I’m about to eat your doughnut.”

Garry Trudeau’s funny look at self-empowerment points out something that has troubled me for some time. I am scared to death that my daughter is a girl. Not scared as in, “it will be hard when she starts dating at 16 or wants to drive at 18” but scared as in right now, two days shy of 20 months. I’m here with my mom and my friend Chris to talk about an issue in my life and my first grade classroom—the sexualization of young girls in the media.

When did this fear begin to take hold of me? In the days leading up to my daughter’s birth I started paying attention to the messages young girls receive every day. At the same time my class read two versions of “Snow White,” one, with no author credited except Disney, mirrors the Disney film and tells us how the animals of the forest protected Snow White because of her beauty. Even the traditional version, by the Brothers Grimm, originally called Snow Drop, speaks of the supernatural power Snow White’s beauty held on the hunter charged with killing her and the ferocious forest animals. Instead of bringing the wicked queen Snow White’s lung and liver to prove he has killed her he brings her those of a boar, which she eats with a touch of salt. Yuck.

The other day a teaching assistant was giving a hand to one of my students as she straightened up her locker. She said, “girls keep neat lockers—make sure your locker is neat,” in a helpful voice. This got under my skin—why put unfair pressure on half your class to keep tidy lockers? Are you less of a girl if your locker is messy? Would Snow White have been killed if she wasn’t so pretty?
Stacy Weiner of the Washington Post wrote a great article about media portrayals of young girls on February 20th of this year. My mom will share some of the most troubling parts:

Mom: Throughout U.S. culture, and particularly in mainstream media, women and girls are depicted in a sexualizing manner," declares the American Psychological Association's Task Force on the Sexualization of Girls.

Nathan: Wait, they have a task force?

Mom: Looks like they do.

Nathan: Well, at least I’m not the only one thinking about this.

Mom: As I was saying, American girls are increasingly being fed a cultural catnip of products and images that promote looking and acting sexy. Sexualization has been linked to "three of the most common mental health problems of girls and women: eating disorders, low se</itunes:summary>

CRITICAL LITERACY: WHAT IT MEANS TO ME

(MUSIC INTRO)

Hello, MF EDOOMCATOR here. This a podcast designed for American University’s EDU 623 Critical Literacy course with Dr. Vivian Vasquez. My personal blog, additional resources, information, and links about the class can be found at http://edoomacator.blogspot.com

Welcome.

In this broadcast, I’m going to define critical literacy in my own words as it relates to my beliefs, life, and classroom teaching. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, the word critical can be defined as “relating to, or being a turning point or especially important juncture” or it can be defined as “indispensable, essential for success, proper functioning”.

Literacy is defined as “the state of being literate” where literate is defined as “versed in literature or creative writing” or it means “having knowledge or competence”.

To combine some elements of the dictionary definitions of the two words, I could say that critical literacy means “having and relating knowledge that is indispensable or essential for success.”

I find this definition very true in meeting my goals of teaching my students to think from a more critical perspective.

(MUSIC BREAK)

So, what does critical literacy mean to me?

Critical literacy means:
•	Reading between the lines of the written word
•	Looking into the colors and images of the painted picture
•	Listening beyond the spoken word
•	Perceiving through the pixels of the TV or computer screen
•	Looking at the world in a different perspective
•	Analyzing yours and others contextualized views
•	Changing your perspective
•	Developing an understanding of perceptions
•	Creating relationships with your world

In short, I believe that the goal of critical literacy should be the dictionary definition of “having and relating knowledge that is indispensable or essential for success.”

My goal as an educator is to provide my students the opportunities and exposure to think about the world around them more critically. I want to create relationships with what is learned and with what they presently face and could face in the future. I want to help develop a critical mind and view that is capable of thinking and relating they’re own lives to the world to become successful individuals. I hope I am on the right track…

Thanks for listening. MF EDOOMCATOR signing off.

Partial Transcript

Show 38 already! Can you believe it! Welcome back. Tonight I have a treat for you.

When I first started podcasting I did so with the particular intent of sharing what I know about critical literacy and engaging you in sharing with me and other listeners your thoughts, comments, questions, connections, issues and teaching practices with regards to critical literacies in and outside of school.

As time went on and more and more of you started commenting and offering suggestions from which I have created shows and as I started to develop some wonderful friendships with others in the podcasting community, I began imagining different ways that podcasting could find a place in the world of parenting, teaching, learning and researching.

So, for the next while I’ll be sharing work I’ve done with classroom teachers, in the courses I teach as well as in my work with Carol Felderman and her second graders. This is actually where I want to start by sharing with you a podcast created by a group of second graders who call themselves 100% Kids. In this show I’ll play one of their earlier podcasts and then in a subsequent show I’ll take you behind the scenes to meet Carol and some of her students so that you can hear first hand about how the show was born.

Thanks To:
Before I go I want to say thank you to the following people for contributing to the show, participating in the show, commenting on the show or contacting me regarding the show;
Erin , John Sparrow, Caroline Petrow, Andrea of Just One More Book, Will, Collette, Lara, Charles of Mostly News, Whittney of LD Podcast, Andrew, Bayonle, Chris Brogan, Sue, Sharon Greene, Rachel, Jenn, Kristina, my good friend Brec Cooke. And of course a special thank you to Carol Felderman and 100%Kids and of course Frank for the station ID.

An Interview with Mini Grey _ CLIP 34

Intro

Hello Everyone! Here we are with show #34 of the CLIP Podcast. Tonight I have for you a long-awaited interview with Mini Grey author of Traction Man and The Adventures of the Dish and Spoon amongst other books. We did the interview using e-mail so this evening Andrea Ross of Just One More Book very graciously agreed to read Mini’s responses. So thank you very much to Mini for the interview and to Andrea for helping me with tonight’s show!

What I like most about Traction Man and Adventures with Dish and Spoon is the way both texts offer different perspectives on familiar characters such as superheroes and nursery rhyme characters. Traction man is also packed with a number of social issues that create space for taking up notions of gender, war, identity construction, positioning, and so forth.

Midtro

What are three things you think we should know about you?
I have a nearly four month old son called Herbie, a partner called Tony and a cat called Bonzetta who is sitting next to the computer keyboard right now. I live in Oxford and love walking up hills and along rivers.

What motivates or inspires you to write books like Traction Man or The Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon?
I love picture books – with picture books you can use words and pictures as a double act, even tell two different versions of a story at the same time. Because even very young people are expert readers of pictures, you can convey very complex and subtle messages through pictures that you’d need loads of words to explain. Making a picture book is also a bit like making your own film – and you can make ANYTHING YOU WANT happen, however impossible!
In Traction Man the environment is actually very ordinary – so the fun is in inventing all the objects that will be there – or trying to imagine ordinary objects seen from a slightly different angle. For example, when I was trying to work out the underwater world of the Sink, I was trying to imagine a sink that Jacques Cousteau might explore, and what sort of undersea creatures could soggy cornflakes and tomato peel and bacon rind turn into, and how in that environment a dishcloth could become like a lethal giant squid – so it’s perhaps trying to give ordinary objects a secret life.

I think sometimes it is more inspiring to take a quite ordinary situation and introduce one extraordinary thing into it – than it is to imagine a whole amazing world where absolutely anything can happen. I think it can encourage creativity to begin with a few limitations. And it’s about seeing the analogies between things, using your imagination – how a trainer could be a bit like a spaceship, and kitchen unit could be a bit like a cliff, a bit of lateral thinking… If you imagine being about 30cm high, just about everything in a house turns into an adventurous environment – a bath becomes an ocean, a shrubbery becomes a jungle – and just imagine if you met the household pet cat…

The Dish and the Spoon began as a brainstorm of ‘all the things that a dish and spoon could do together’ and grew quite filmically (if that</itunes:summary>

CLIP 31 is short, sweet and fun.

Welcome to this special edition of the CLIP Podcast. I had no plans on putting together this show until I received a comment from Julie a second grader from Virginia. So a big hello to Julie and her classmates as well as her teacher Carol! In any case I’ve been working with Julie’s teacher, Carol on creating spaces for critical literacy in her classroom and one of the tools that we’ve talked about for doing this, is podcasting. Julie and her classmates have had a chance to listen to some podcasts created by children as well as CLIP to help them figure out if podcasting may be of interest to them and today in her e-mail she excitedly shared that in class earlier this week, they chose a name for their show. It will be called 100% Kids. Awesome. I can’t wait to get started on this project with them.

So this show is for you 100%Kids Group! I thought I’d put out a special show to share with you some possible tools for your podcast site.

The first is the use of video. You can find the video on the CLIP Podcast site. This one is a video that my husband and I did with our three year old just for fun. I hope it gives you an idea of how you can easily create short videos as one way to show your audience what you are thinking.

The second is spell with Flickr which I really like. You can go on the site and create all sorts of words using letters taken from different places. So you can decide on what letters work together and talk about how your audience might react to different combinations of letters.

The third is Artroom. It’s on the website for a famous gallery in England, the Saatchi Gallery, where kids can make display art online. You could create some artwork for your audit trail or for your podcast site using the Artroom.

So there are some ideas for you! Enjoy and I’ll see you soon.

The Not So Only Child Goes to School_CLIP30

Welcome to show# 30 of the CLIP Podcast. Today I have for you the second half of a conversation with Heather Jopling author of wonderful books on same sex parents and alternative lifestyles, specifically Ryan’s Mom is Tall, Monicka’s Papa is Tall, and The Not So Only Child. Today my conversation with Heather focuses on getting these books into the classroom and creating a dialogue regarding the issues raised in the books.

Bumper
Midtro

One of the topics Heather and I talked about had to do with children’s books and educational settings, specifically, the classroom. In this first segment Heather shares insights on why books like The Not So Only Child belong in the classroom.

Heather audio

In this final segment Heather talks specifically about The Not So Only Child. What I like most about her comments is the perspective on diversity from which she speaks.

Thank You Heather!

Before I go I want to say thank you to the following people for contributing to the show, participating in the show, commenting on the show or contacting me regarding the show; Carol, Julie, Andy from the Andycast, Andrea from Just One More Book, and Vickie from the Beaded Embrace.

Wecome to show 29 of the CLIP Podcast. This week, I’m breaking clip tradition by releasing two shows. Today's show is the second in what I hope to be many crossover shows between CLIP and Just One More Book, a podcast on children’s books done by Andrea and Mark in their favorite coffee shop in Ottawa. As most of you know Just One More book is one of the podcasts on my must listen list. Over the past six months we’ve created through the air waves a very enjoyable, supportive, and respectful relationship which I value very much.

Tomorrow I'll be releasing part 2 of my conversation with Heather Jopling.

For today's show what Andrea, Mark, and I have done is deliberately choose the same text, Tudley Didn’t Know , a picture book by John Himmelman, from which to build an episode on a show we have both released today! I love that we are able to take advantage of podcasting as a tool for transcending space and bringing to you complimentary perspectives and discussions , from two different shows, on the same text! You can access Just One More Book at www.justonemorebook.com where you will hear Andrea and Mark talk about Tudley.

A friend and colleague, Jerry Harste notes, when we read something, we usually have an initial response or reaction, which may change if we have to defend our response, if we talk to someone with a different interpretation, or if we engage in conversation. He further asserts that to be critically literate we need to know about alternate ways of responding as well as know how our response positions us in the world. He continues by saying too often in the past, we have prepared readers without this kind of agency. In response to this problem he adapted a strategy from David Bleich on supporting readers to develop the habits of mind to seek out multiple (and even conflicting versions) of every story they hear and to “take agency” in fashioning those responses to reflect how they want to position themselves as well as how they wish others to see them in the world.

For this crossover show what I decided to do with the help of three colleagues, Jerry Harste from Indiana, Carol Felderman from Virginia and Charlotte Gonzalez also from Virginia, is to offer you ways of thinking about Tudley from different interpretive stances.

In a nutshell, Tudley is a playful book about a young turtle who doesn’t realize there are things that he probably shouldn’t be able to do as a turtle, such as fly, until someone or something else calls attention to it.

The first perspective on Tudley represents an aesthetic stance. Aesthetic responses deal with the emotional experience of reading.

Here is an example of an intertextual perspective. In this stance readers make sense of the text in terms of other texts.

From a philosophical stance we discussed the notion of universal truths or messages.

The final stance represented in our conversation is a critical perspective, which helps us see the big issues that lie just beyond the </itunes:summary>

Transcript for Childhood Revisited _ CLIP 27

Intro

Hi There. As promised here I am with show 27 of the CLIP Podcast. Thank you for coming back to listen to the show. I received quite a bit of really thoughtful feedback from the past two shows that I decided to create this show based on that feedback. Next week I’ll be airing an interview with Heather Jopling, author of some very thoughtful and thought-provoking texts such as The Not So Only Child and Ryan’s Mom is Tall.

Before I get on with this week’s show I want to share with you what I believe to be a wonderful compliment and honor that I found out about just before recording this show. Mark Blevis in his blog at www.markblevis.com included me in his list of top 10 most underrated podcasts. It was such a terrific surprise. Mark is the host of Elecric Sky and co-host of Just One More Book, a podcast that I talk about frequently on CLIP. He also co-hosts the Canadian Podcast Buffet, a show that sustains and nurtures the Canadian Podcasting community. So he is a respected leader in the field and I want to publicly thank you Mark for honoring me and CLIP by including me in your top ten list especially given the other names already on the list!

Audio from Carol Felderman

Thank you very much to Carol Felderman for sending that audio. What is most interesting to me regarding her thoughts are her reflections on her own childhood recalling how she and her brother also participated as consumers of Mcdonalds happy meals. In this case I think what critical literacy has afforded us is a way of talking about some issues and instances of living from a different perspective. I was also very interested in her comment regarding the relationship between power and the happy meal toys, which her students use as tools for positioning themselves within the classroom community. In a sense these happy meal toys represent a form of cultural capital in their particular setting.

Anna Sumida was inspired by the Happy Meal conversation that she now wants to raise some issues regarding the Happy Meal with students with whom she works to hear what they’d have to say.

Charles Cadenhead, who has a young son and daughter, commented that he finds the girls toys in general to be of a more supportive and cooperative nature than the boy toys which are usually associate with themes of war, fighting and competition.

Andrea who has two young daughters shared a funny story. She said while buzzing around the kitchen in a world of her own, trying to navigate her other 3 house-mates, she noticed her younger daughter Bayla had stopped emptying her lunch bag and was trying repeatedly to tell her something. Andrea finally realized what she was saying “Mom, there’s a bad word on this spoon” (the disposable spoon she had had in her lunch bag). She stopped buzzing and focused on the hard-to-read raised lettering on the black take-out spoon which read “McDonalds”. She</itunes:summary>

This is a quick hello to let you know I was hoping to get a show out tonight but unfortunately teaching an evening class on Monday nights makes it rather challenging to release a show I’m happy with,so I’m going to have to change my show nights to Tuesdays at least until the e
