Negotiating Social Action Projects_CLIP21
Partial Transcript

Hello Everyone. You are listening to show 21 of the CLIP podcast, seroquel for anxiety. Tonight’s show is part two of a three part series, Seroquel elderly, which was recorded on the beautiful island of Hawaii, at the International Reading Association’s Regional Conference which was held there two weeks ago.

I focused my talk on particular critical moves in my life as a literacy educator. In today’s segment you will hear me talking about the second move, can seroquel cause anxiety, which I refer to as Negotiating Spaces for Critical Literacy. Some of you may have heard me share this story in show number 1. Seroquel for anxiety, My experience in presenting this work has sometimes been met with skepticism regarding whether or not my students really were able to participate in projects dealing with such deep and often difficult social issues. Seroquel medicina, So today, what I will do is take you on brief journey to familiarize you with some of the sights and sounds of the classroom.

The School Site
The school was located in a very diverse, multi ethnic, seroquel root word, middle class community just outside Metropolitan Toronto in Ontario, Canada. Cost of seroquel, Although the socio economic context has been designated ‘middle class’, this was not straightforward. Within this area, there were homes occupied by more than one family, seroquel diabetes mellitus hyperglycemia. The class was a half -day pre school group that met from 8.45am – 11.15am, M-F, seroquel for anxiety.

Physical Environment and Resources
-The physical space of the classroom was flexible enough to incorporate changes and provide room for innovation and improvisation.

-A wide range of rich resources such as videos, Seroquel medication, news articles, music, books, everyday texts, injection seroquel, art posters and web sites were available. Along with materials needed to support the study of the different issues that interested the class. Seroquel and parkinson's, -Observation was an important feature of practice, as it enabled me to build on children’s interests in important and reflective ways. Seroquel for anxiety, -The carefully constructed environment offered children physical, social, emotional and cognitive spaces in which to engage in their critical projects and, to become co-researchers and participants in collaborative activities.

The Curriculum
The curriculum emerged in an organic way from the cultural and social practices in which my students and I engaged.

Classroom practice was the result of a complex dynamic of theorized practice, seroquel illegal drugs, each one informing the other. Critical literacy theories impacted approaches to teaching, Seroquel causing head paresthesia tingling, but the effects of these approaches and the issues raised in practice also affected the theories and understanding of them. The curriculum was not free from curricular mandates and the threat of standardized testing. The School Board dictated specific programs to follow, seroquel for anxiety. As the classroom teacher, I made sure that I understood what was expected of me through the mandated curriculum in order to demonstrate to parents, seroquel off label, colleagues and administrators that our negotiated curriculum surpassed the required curriculum. I did this as a way of creating as much space as I could to engage in the literacy work that I felt would offer my students more opportunities for contributing to social change and that would give them access to more powerful literacies. Get seroquel, As a context for negotiating critical literacies with young children, a critical perspective provided my students with opportunities, as noted by Comber (2005) to;
-Engage with local realities,
-Research and analyze language / power relationships, seroquel colds, practices and effects.
-Mobilize students’ knowledge and practices, Seroquel disrupting thyroid function, -(Re) design texts with political and social intent and real world use,
-Subvert taken for granted ‘school’ texts,
-Focus on students’ use of local cultural texts, and
-Examine how power is exercised and by whom

From Kid-watching to Podcasting _ CLIP20 Transcript

Aloha. Welcome to show 20 of the CLIP podcast. Seroquel overdose hyperglycemia, Although I am no longer in Hawaii the audio for today’s show was recorded at the International Reading Association’s Regional Conference which was held there last week. Seroquel quetiapine fumarate prozac, Before going any further I first want to say from the bottom of my heart , mahalo to my Hawaiian colleagues and friends especially Liana Honda, JoAnn Wong-Kam, Anna Sumida, Alice Kimura, Joyce Ahuna-Ka'ai'ai, Meleanna Meyer, Kathy Wurdem, Avis Masuda, and Malia Chong. This show is dedicated to you. I left Hawaii in awe of your passion, and commitment to stand up for the rights of the children with whom you work and the communities in which you live. You are amazing, what is seroquel for, and you are inspiring and I am thrilled to have, together with you, created a space for us to carry on the much needed conversations that we started. Seroquel help with anxiety, Today’s show is part one of a three part series of my presentation at the Regional Conference in Hawaii. I decided to do this in three parts for ease of downloading as well as to give you a bit of breather between sections, seroquel quetiapine fumarate prozac. This also makes it possible for me to add some editorial bits.

In a nutshell, I focused my talk on particular critical moves in my life as a literacy educator. In today’s segment you will hear me talking about the first move, seroquel experience forum, which I refer to as Kid-watching a term popularized, I believe by Yetta Goodman.

From Kid-watching To Podcasting:
Negotiating Critical Literacies in School Settings

My plan for today is to create an opportunity for you to think about critical literacy as it is talked about and practiced in different spaces and places. Seroquel quetiapine fumarate prozac, To do this I’ve organized my talk using what I consider to be critical moves in my life as a literacy educator. Seroquel xr approved canada bipolar depression, By critical moves, I mean those moments in time that represent particular shifts in my teaching or practice. The three moves in particular that I will use to guide my talk are kid-watching, negotiating, and Podcasting, twitching from seroquel.

In particular I will share two stories of life in a classroom and a podcast that represent for me the critical moves I mentioned earlier.

Kid-watching as a Critical Move
The first story took place, in fall 1986, Depression help seroquel, when I was assigned, my first group of students, a grade one class of 29 children. That was when I met six-year-old Kevin, seroquel quetiapine fumarate prozac. Little did I know how Kevin would impact my life as an educator. Why, bipolar depression seroquel. Because of an incident ,that happened in the classroom that became for me a critical moment. In fact I ended up writing about this incident , Seroquel swollen feet, which was published in the Reading Teacher years later. Seroquel quetiapine fumarate prozac, I wrote,

So the idea of being a researcher in my own classroom really helped me theorize my practice and it was theorizing my practice that shaped my work in critical literacy. The relationship between theory and practice that I connect with here is one where, as noted by Larson and Marsh (2005), theory is practice and practice is theorized as it is transformed over time (p. 2), seroquel depakote and risperidone. As I began to frame my teaching in this way I started to imagine different ways of working with text that moved beyond more common practices I had been trying, such as asking my students “What is your favorite book?” “What makes that book your favorite?” or having them “Write or draw about their favorite part”.

The field of critical literacy is now fairly extensive and there are many examples of practice that draws from its theoretical framework, What is the drug seroquel, but there are still relatively few accounts of critical literacy in early primary classrooms. Here I’m talking not about publications that outline strategies for critical literacy but those narrative accounts of what critical literacy looks and sounds like in different places around the globe, seroquel quetiapine fumarate prozac. I’m talking about critical literacy that is highly localized and then globalized not cookie cutter type critical literacy activities. I’m talking about critical literacy that isn’t sanitized between the pages of some newly mandated curriculum but the stuff that is negotiated in particular spaces and places for particular purposes, needs and desires.

A few weeks ago I was presenting a workshop with Andy Manning and Jerry Harste where Andy described the inclusion of critical literacy within curricular documents as one way to sanitize it, judge anne conway mdl seroquel. He noted that once a perspective like critical literacy is inserted in such documents, everything around it has a better shot at killing it off and I imagine re-shaping it into nothingness. Seroquel quetiapine fumarate prozac, Today then my plan is to share with you by showing, and not so much telling about my work with critical literacy through the years by presenting examples of critical literacy work as grounded instances of critical literacy in school settings and beyond. I will also briefly share what I consider to be recent critical moves in the field. Does seroquel and aspirin interact, This list compiled by Larson and Marsh in their new book Making Literacy Real appears in a chapter in which they describe some of my work in Negotiating Critical Literacies with young children. It represents key tenets in critical literacy with which I engaged and I think it gives you a snapshot version and definition of what critical literacy means to me.

1. Literacy is not a neutral technology, it is always ideologically situated, seroquel quetiapine fumarate prozac. It is shaped by power and, in turn, seroquel drug info, shapes subjects and discourses (Freebody and Luke, 1990).

So literacy always happens from a particular perspective that shapes and constructs us in different ways. Seroquel dose, 2. Learners are differently positioned in relation to access to dominant literacy discourses through aspects such as ‘race’, class, culture, gender, parkinson's and delusions seroquel, language, sexual orientation, and physical abilities (Meacham, Seroquel lawsuit over weight gain, 2003; Vicars, 2003). Seroquel quetiapine fumarate prozac, In other words different people are more or less able to access more powerful forms of literacy. This connects with what Finn (1999) refers to as literacy with an attitude. That is literacy education that resists the kind of education designed to produce obedient citizens.

3, seroquel settling in bipolar. Critical literacy practices can foster political awareness and social change (Freire & Macedo, 1987; Luke & Freebody, 1990). So it’s transformative in ways, seroquel quetiapine fumarate prozac. Side effects of seroquel, 4. Critical literacy involves any or all of the following: having a critical perspective on language and literacy itself, on particular texts and/ or on wider social practices (Lankshear, 1997).

5, sexual arousal and seroquel. Learners’ own cultural and semiotic resources should be utilized within classrooms and their critical stances towards these resources recognized and extended (Comber, 2001; Comber & Simpson, 2001;Dyson, Seroquel and prozac, 2001, 2003; Vasquez, 2001; 2004 a & b). Seroquel quetiapine fumarate prozac, 6. Text design and production can provide opportunities for critique and potential transformation of discourses of power (Janks, 2000; Vasquez, seroquel metabolites, 2001; 2004a & b). This isn’t always easy of course. The statement reminds me of a middle school teacher David Nakai who spent a good deal of time de-constructing and critically analyzing consumerism through Nike. Lamictal c seroquel interactions, In any case after weeks of doing this work, one of his students walked into the classroom decked out in Nike gear. When David looked at him and commented on his new shoes, the student said “What, seroquel quetiapine fumarate prozac. I thought we were finished with the Nike stuff two weeks ago.” Or something to that effect. So, this work cannot be done in one shot…it really needs to be ongoing and sustainable to stick.

The theoretical toolkit which informed my practice was influenced by the work of such researchers as of Luke and Freebody (1997), Janks (1996), Comber (2001) , Gee (1999) and so forth.

In the next segment, which will air within the next week, I focus on negotiating critical literacies as my second critical move as a literacy educator.

Transcript for Acts of Courage and Acts of Kindness
CLIP #16

Intro

Welcome to CLIP 16 everyone. I'm going to play around with the order of things today so rather than doing acknowledgements and thank you's up front I'll wait till later and jump right into the show. Maximum dose for seroquel, Let me know what you think of this format.

Before I get going though I want to extend a big hello to member of the Toronto Reading Council and folks from OISE with whom I had a wonderful time talking about critical literacy this past weekend. Seroquel xr, Today, I pick up on last week's show and the topic of taking action to change things that are problematic in our communities and beyond. I couldn't get the voices of the children from Selsted Primary out of my head and so spent a number of days imagining what other texts might work nicely with the Save Our School song. So, seroquel withdrawal, what I have done is to put together a multi-media text set of children's books and audio that focus on acts of courage and acts of kindness. I really do believe that in combination, Seroquel breast feeding, the texts I will share work very well together to enrich and inform discussions and work on the issue of taking action to change inequitable ways of being.

Station ID – Patrick and Catalina

Midtro

Already, you know one piece I would include in today's multi-modal text set is the Save Our School song which as I mentioned is a terrific demonstration of the power of music to shape political and social experiencel. So imagine, then combining this song with a book like Si Se Puede, Yes We Can, a bilingual book about the justice for janitors strike in LA as told from the perspective of a young boy whose mother becomes a leader of the strike, seroquel xr. Another book that would be a powerful addition would be The Streets are Free by Kurusa and Monika Doppert which is a story based on the experience of children in a low income neighborhood in Venezuela who fought for the right to turn an empty lot into a playground, seroquel and rhabdo. So it’s about organizing to defend your rights. Another book is Selavi, Seroquel swollen hands, That's Life which is a true story of Selavi, a street child in Haiti who shares food and a place to sleep with other street children who eventually contributes to opening a home for children and starting Radyo Timoun, Children's Radio, a station run by and for children, interactions between seroquel and risperdal, which, until March of 2004, Generic drug seroquel, was still in operation.

Alongside these books you could include the publication IndyKids which I have talked about previously on the show. Seroquel xr, Since discovering IndyKids I've learned of BabagaNewz, which is a full-color monthly classroom magazine that accurately and thoughtfully analyzes major news stories, religious holidays, cultural events and youth trends that play an important part in our children's lives. This particular magazine focuses each issue around a specific Jewish value. As in the past I will have links to each of these publications and resources in the show notes, seroquel product information eu sourced.

Kids Can Make A Difference® (KIDS), is another great addition to the text set. Function of seroquel, It is an educational program for middle- and high school students, which focuses on the root causes of hunger and poverty, the people most affected, solutions, street value of seroquel, and how students can help. The major goal is to stimulate the students to take some definite follow-up actions as they begin to realize that one person can make a difference, seroquel xr.

Speaking of action, Drug interaction seroquel antihistamine, one of Sage Tyrtle’s recent shows on Quirky Nomads focuses on Deamonte Love and schools in Louisiana who are still struggling in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

In hopes of trying to contribute in some way I asked Sage, if she would let me air some audio form her show that very clearly explains what you and I can do to help kids in Louisiana to once again have access to books in their schools and homes since the devastation of the hurricanes.

Sage Tyrtle on Diamonte Love

I have a request for listeners who are either teachers or professors integrating this podcast into their course work or students who are tuning in as a course requirement to please either send me e-mail or voice mail telling me how you are using the show in your setting, seroquel jpi. I'd love to be able to create a list of ways the show has been used.

Jeff Wood- What Critical Literacy Means to Me Seroquel xr, Before I go I have many people to thank this week. Sage Tyrtle of Quirky Nomads, Seroquel genius, Pat Thompson, Sarah VZ, charles of Mostly News and Desperate Husbands Podcast, Fran Hughes from Queensland, drugs similar to seroquel, Australia, jeff wood, from Sudbury Ontario in Canada, Carol Felderman, Laura Mayoral, Annika, Stephanie from Tokyo, and Shelley Peterson… for commenting on the show, contacting me regarding the show, or pinning my frappr map. Just One More Book Promo

Sticks and Stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me, seroquel drug deals. Does that saying bring back memories. I recall saying these words on occasion, Seroquel for sociopathy, as a child in the Philippines where I was born, and also in Canada, where I grew up. In his book Choice Words, Peter Johnston notes that language is not merely representational (although it is that), seroquel blocks opiates, but that is also creates realities and identities. So, language therefore works in powerful ways to position people in relation to one another. Seroquel drug deals, This idea, although a very important one, is probably one that is difficult to take up with children. Seroquel adverse affect syncope hypotension, How do we talk about not just what words mean but how words mean things and how words used in particular ways can be very powerful, for instance in hurting, convincing or marginalizing others. One text that could create space for this conversation is Elbert’s Bad Word by Audrey Wood. My friends at Just One More Book do a very good job of detailing the book so go to www.justonemorebook.com for that review, wellbutrin and seroquel.

In a nutshell, the book is about a young boy who while at a dinner party hears a bad word he has never heard before.

"The word floated by like a small storm cloud, seroquel drug deals. It was ugly and covered with dark, Seroquel causes weight gain, bristly hairs. With a swift flick of his wrist, Elbert snatched the word from the air and stuffed it into his back pocket."

Then after a turn of events that results in a mallet landing on Elbert’s toe,

"The bad word sprang out of his mouth bigger and uglier than before."

After having his mouth washed out with soap by his mother, the story continues with Elbert and the dinner party until the trouble began anew, seroquel aspergers. As you might predict in the end Elbert finds new alternative ways of expressing his emotions and the big ugly word is replace with,

"My stars. Thunder and lighting, Colorado seroquel, rats and blue blazes, suffering cats, blistering hop toads, zounds and gadzooks". Seroquel drug deals, So it's a good book for thinking about alternate ways of expressing negative emotions. It's also a good book for thinking and talking about the power of words and therefore the relationship between language and power, seroquel astrazeneca launched. Some ideas to think about include,

What makes a word a bad word.

Who decides what words are bad. Seroquel ocd, Who is hurt or harmed by such words and in what ways.

Who is advantaged by such words, seroquel drug deals.

How do such words work to position people in particular ways, for intance to reject some while accepting others.

Elbert's Bad Word can create space for thinking about discourse and discursive practices (ways of talking, doing and being) and the social construction of language as well as how language can be re-constructed, does seroquel abuse get you high. Google James Paul Gee and/or Hilary Janks for more on this. There’s a part in the book that goes,

"Everyone at the party was shocked. Seroquel drug deals, They couldn’t believe their ears."

This was regarding Elbert blurting out a bad word almost pointing a finger of blame of some sort on Elbert as if he discovered this bad word on his own, and as if it came from nowhere, and as though children should be held differently responsible for what comes out of their mouths, as though the adults in Elbert’s life played no part in making available such 'bad words'. Doctor quotes on seroquel, Children after all are primarily able to speak using the discursive practices for which they have access.

Tanya Korostil a Canadian colleage, uses art cards (postcard size copies of paintings and other works of art to help her primary aged students represent their thinking and what’s on their minds. I'm thinking that these art cards would work nicely with Elbert's Bad Word as a tool for representing and subsequently coming up with alternate ways of talking about different emotions or experiences.

There are also many other books that can be paired with Elbert to talk about how words are constructed and the effects of words on others, seroquel priapism. These include The Sissy Duckling and Oliver Button is a Sissy, seroquel drug deals. Random bullies after all usually start their assaults with mean words so working with children to understand how words are constructive and constructed is important.

Indykids & indykids.net is another terrific text to combine with Elbert. This newspaper which I focus on in show #10 offers a wonderful demonstration of kids and adults together using words in powerful ways to talk about issues of social justice and equity. Seroquel water intoxication, For instance, in one issue they include an article on a different life for girls in a school in India. In another issue they write about the ongoing argument over teaching the theory of evolution versus intelligent design. I’ve also read a piece on knowing your human rights.

These kids are learning in a very purposeful, intentional way to do life work and in some cases to effect change towards more equitable ways of being through the craft of writing and deliberately choosing particular words to make a case for their arguments and positions.

I have linked all of the authors, book titles, publications and websites mentioned in the show notes so make sure to check that out at www.clippodcast.com

Thank you for listening I hope that our crossover show has left you with food for thought until next time…
