Wecome to show 29 of the CLIP Podcast. This week, I’m breaking clip tradition by releasing two shows. Today's show is the second in what I hope to be many crossover shows between CLIP and Just One More Book, a podcast on children’s books done by Andrea and Mark in their favorite coffee shop in Ottawa, imitrex Pill. As most of you know Just One More book is one of the podcasts on my must listen list. Over the past six months we’ve created through the air waves a very enjoyable, supportive, and respectful relationship which I value very much.

Tomorrow I'll be releasing part 2 of my conversation with Heather Jopling, Discount lotrisone Online.

For today's show what Andrea, Mark, and I have done is deliberately choose the same text, Tudley Didn’t Know , a picture book by John Himmelman, from which to build an episode on a show we have both released today. Imitrex Pill, I love that we are able to take advantage of podcasting as a tool for transcending space and bringing to you complimentary perspectives and discussions , from two different shows, on the same text. You can access Just One More Book at www.justonemorebook.com where you will hear Andrea and Mark talk about Tudley.

A friend and colleague, Jerry Harste notes, when we read something, we usually have an initial response or reaction, which may change if we have to defend our response, if we talk to someone with a different interpretation, Accupril Dosage, or if we engage in conversation. He further asserts that to be critically literate we need to know about alternate ways of responding as well as know how our response positions us in the world. He continues by saying too often in the past, we have prepared readers without this kind of agency. In response to this problem he adapted a strategy from David Bleich on supporting readers to develop the habits of mind to seek out multiple (and even conflicting versions) of every story they hear and to “take agency” in fashioning those responses to reflect how they want to position themselves as well as how they wish others to see them in the world, imitrex Pill.

For this crossover show what I decided to do with the help of three colleagues, Jerry Harste from Indiana, Carol Felderman from Virginia and Charlotte Gonzalez also from Virginia, is to offer you ways of thinking about Tudley from different interpretive stances.

In a nutshell, Tudley is a playful book about a young turtle who doesn’t realize there are things that he probably shouldn’t be able to do as a turtle, such as fly, until someone or something else calls attention to it.

The first perspective on Tudley represents an aesthetic stance. Aesthetic responses deal with the emotional experience of reading. Imitrex Pill, Here is an example of an intertextual perspective. In this stance readers make sense of the text in terms of other texts, Cheapest zanaflex.

From a philosophical stance we discussed the notion of universal truths or messages.

The final stance represented in our conversation is a critical perspective, which helps us see the big issues that lie just beyond the text.

Transcript for Childhood Revisited _ CLIP 27

Intro

Hi There. As promised here I am with show 27 of the CLIP Podcast, claritin Side Effects. Thank you for coming back to listen to the show. Nasonex Prescription, I received quite a bit of really thoughtful feedback from the past two shows that I decided to create this show based on that feedback. Next week I’ll be airing an interview with Heather Jopling, author of some very thoughtful and thought-provoking texts such as The Not So Only Child and Ryan’s Mom is Tall.

Before I get on with this week’s show I want to share with you what I believe to be a wonderful compliment and honor that I found out about just before recording this show. Claritin Side Effects, Mark Blevis in his blog at www.markblevis.com included me in his list of top 10 most underrated podcasts. It was such a terrific surprise. Mark is the host of Elecric Sky and co-host of Just One More Book, a podcast that I talk about frequently on CLIP. He also co-hosts the Canadian Podcast Buffet, a show that sustains and nurtures the Canadian Podcasting community. So he is a respected leader in the field and I want to publicly thank you Mark for honoring me and CLIP by including me in your top ten list especially given the other names already on the list.

Audio from Carol Felderman

Thank you very much to Carol Felderman for sending that audio, claritin Side Effects. What is most interesting to me regarding her thoughts are her reflections on her own childhood recalling how she and her brother also participated as consumers of Mcdonalds happy meals. In this case I think what critical literacy has afforded us is a way of talking about some issues and instances of living from a different perspective. I was also very interested in her comment regarding the relationship between power and the happy meal toys, zanaflex Without A Prescription, which her students use as tools for positioning themselves within the classroom community. In a sense these happy meal toys represent a form of cultural capital in their particular setting. Claritin Side Effects, Station id
Midtro

Anna Sumida was inspired by the Happy Meal conversation that she now wants to raise some issues regarding the Happy Meal with students with whom she works to hear what they’d have to say.

Charles Cadenhead, who has a young son and daughter, commented that he finds the girls toys in general to be of a more supportive and cooperative nature than the boy toys which are usually associate with themes of war, fighting and competition.

Andrea who has two young daughters shared a funny story. She said while buzzing around the kitchen in a world of her own, trying to navigate her other 3 house-mates, she noticed her younger daughter Bayla had stopped emptying her lunch bag and was trying repeatedly to tell her something. Andrea finally realized what she was saying “Mom, Cardura No Rr, there’s a bad word on this spoon” (the disposable spoon she had had in her lunch bag). She stopped buzzing and focused on the hard-to-read raised lettering on the black take-out spoon which read “McDonalds”, claritin Side Effects. She says it cracked her up noting “I guess she knows how “we” think!”

Ross of Dry Shave who has a young son, also had a gendered experience with regards to the Happy Meal which he talked about in one of the episodes on his show.

Why are these comments interesting and important to me. Because whether we choose to believe it or not, according to Carmen Luke, although children are not direct income earners, they are in charge of more pocket money than in the past, and they also exert significant power over parental purchase choices so helping them to learn about being informed consumers really does matter.

Intro

Hello Everyone. You are listening to show 25 of the CLIP podcast dedicated to Carol Felderman and her 2nd graders at Bailey’s Elementary School in Falls Church Virginia.

Before I go any further I want to share with you that CLIP has been nominated for the Podcast Peer Awards in the Education category and I want to sincerely thank all of you who voted for me originally but who as a result of some unfortunate circumstances which I’ll talk about in a subsequent show, No Prescription zyprexa, actually had to go in and re-cast your votes. I’m not a big awards person but I’m very honored to have been nominated and I feel so validated to see you all voting for me, Generic allegra. So thank you so much.

Tonight’s show focuses on an instance of learning in a kindergarten classroom where a group of children worked on interrogating, disrupting and analyzing the discourses associated with the McDonald’s Happy Meal. Did you know by the way that McDonald’s is now podcasting. Generic clozapine, The series of podcasts is titled “The McDonald’s You Don’t Know”. Generic allegra, It’s claim is to , and I quote, “share the real story of McDonald's”. The one that I viewed called “Moms and McDonald’s” included 10 women from 7 countries who were called upon by McDonald’s to form a global mom’s panel which in the videocast is referred to as an international think tank representing the pulse of what mom’s are asking for. Isn’t that interesting. Hmm….what do you all think of that. There’s really not that much of a change. It’s still hamburgers and chicken nuggets that are central to the happy meal so let’s keep an eye on the effect of this international think tank.

From Kid-watching to Podcasting _ CLIP20 Transcript

Aloha. Welcome to show 20 of the CLIP podcast. Although I am no longer in Hawaii the audio for today’s show was recorded at the International Reading Association’s Regional Conference which was held there last week. Levitra On Line, Before going any further I first want to say from the bottom of my heart , mahalo to my Hawaiian colleagues and friends especially Liana Honda, JoAnn Wong-Kam, Anna Sumida, Alice Kimura, Joyce Ahuna-Ka'ai'ai, Meleanna Meyer, Kathy Wurdem, Avis Masuda, and Malia Chong. This show is dedicated to you. I left Hawaii in awe of your passion, and commitment to stand up for the rights of the children with whom you work and the communities in which you live. You are amazing, and you are inspiring and I am thrilled to have, together with you, created a space for us to carry on the much needed conversations that we started.

Today’s show is part one of a three part series of my presentation at the Regional Conference in Hawaii. I decided to do this in three parts for ease of downloading as well as to give you a bit of breather between sections, levitra On Line. This also makes it possible for me to add some editorial bits.

In a nutshell, I focused my talk on particular critical moves in my life as a literacy educator. In today’s segment you will hear me talking about the first move, which I refer to as Kid-watching a term popularized, I believe by Yetta Goodman.

Reggie Vasquez station ID and Midtro

From Kid-watching To Podcasting:
Negotiating Critical Literacies in School Settings

My plan for today is to create an opportunity for you to think about critical literacy as it is talked about and practiced in different spaces and places. Levitra On Line, To do this I’ve organized my talk using what I consider to be critical moves in my life as a literacy educator. Order detrol Overnight Delivery, By critical moves, I mean those moments in time that represent particular shifts in my teaching or practice. The three moves in particular that I will use to guide my talk are kid-watching, negotiating, and Podcasting.

In particular I will share two stories of life in a classroom and a podcast that represent for me the critical moves I mentioned earlier.

Kid-watching as a Critical Move
The first story took place, in fall 1986, when I was assigned, my first group of students, a grade one class of 29 children. That was when I met six-year-old Kevin, levitra On Line. Little did I know how Kevin would impact my life as an educator. Why. Because of an incident ,that happened in the classroom that became for me a critical moment. In fact I ended up writing about this incident ,which was published in the Reading Teacher years later. Levitra On Line, I wrote,

So the idea of being a researcher in my own classroom really helped me theorize my practice and it was theorizing my practice that shaped my work in critical literacy. The relationship between theory and practice that I connect with here is one where, as noted by Larson and Marsh (2005), theory is practice and practice is theorized as it is transformed over time (p. 2). As I began to frame my teaching in this way I started to imagine different ways of working with text that moved beyond more common practices I had been trying, such as asking my students “What is your favorite book?” “What makes that book your favorite?” or having them “Write or draw about their favorite part”.

The field of critical literacy is now fairly extensive and there are many examples of practice that draws from its theoretical framework, but there are still relatively few accounts of critical literacy in early primary classrooms. Here I’m talking not about publications that outline strategies for critical literacy but those narrative accounts of what critical literacy looks and sounds like in different places around the globe, levitra On Line. I’m talking about critical literacy that is highly localized and then globalized not cookie cutter type critical literacy activities. I’m talking about critical literacy that isn’t sanitized between the pages of some newly mandated curriculum but the stuff that is negotiated in particular spaces and places for particular purposes, needs and desires.

A few weeks ago I was presenting a workshop with Andy Manning and Jerry Harste where Andy described the inclusion of critical literacy within curricular documents as one way to sanitize it, neurontin Prescription. He noted that once a perspective like critical literacy is inserted in such documents, everything around it has a better shot at killing it off and I imagine re-shaping it into nothingness. Levitra On Line, Today then my plan is to share with you by showing, and not so much telling about my work with critical literacy through the years by presenting examples of critical literacy work as grounded instances of critical literacy in school settings and beyond. I will also briefly share what I consider to be recent critical moves in the field.

This list compiled by Larson and Marsh in their new book Making Literacy Real appears in a chapter in which they describe some of my work in Negotiating Critical Literacies with young children. It represents key tenets in critical literacy with which I engaged and I think it gives you a snapshot version and definition of what critical literacy means to me.

1. Literacy is not a neutral technology, it is always ideologically situated, levitra On Line. It is shaped by power and, in turn, shapes subjects and discourses (Freebody and Luke, 1990).

So literacy always happens from a particular perspective that shapes and constructs us in different ways.

2. Learners are differently positioned in relation to access to dominant literacy discourses through aspects such as ‘race’, class, culture, gender, language, sexual orientation, and physical abilities (Meacham, 2003; Vicars, 2003). Levitra On Line, In other words different people are more or less able to access more powerful forms of literacy. This connects with what Finn (1999) refers to as literacy with an attitude. That is literacy education that resists the kind of education designed to produce obedient citizens.

3. Critical literacy practices can foster political awareness and social change (Freire & Macedo, 1987; Luke & Freebody, 1990). So it’s transformative in ways, levitra On Line. Augmentin Dosage, 4. Critical literacy involves any or all of the following: having a critical perspective on language and literacy itself, on particular texts and/ or on wider social practices (Lankshear, 1997).

5. Learners’ own cultural and semiotic resources should be utilized within classrooms and their critical stances towards these resources recognized and extended (Comber, 2001; Comber & Simpson, 2001;Dyson, 2001, 2003; Vasquez, 2001; 2004 a & b). Levitra On Line, 6. Text design and production can provide opportunities for critique and potential transformation of discourses of power (Janks, 2000; Vasquez, 2001; 2004a & b). This isn’t always easy of course. The statement reminds me of a middle school teacher David Nakai who spent a good deal of time de-constructing and critically analyzing consumerism through Nike. In any case after weeks of doing this work, one of his students walked into the classroom decked out in Nike gear. When David looked at him and commented on his new shoes, the student said “What, levitra On Line. I thought we were finished with the Nike stuff two weeks ago.” Or something to that effect. So, this work cannot be done in one shot…it really needs to be ongoing and sustainable to stick.

The theoretical toolkit which informed my practice was influenced by the work of such researchers as of Luke and Freebody (1997), Janks (1996), Comber (2001) , Gee (1999) and so forth.

In the next segment, which will air within the next week, I focus on negotiating critical literacies as my second critical move as a literacy educator.

Have you heard of Handy Manny.

Gary Marsh, President, of Disney Channel Worldwide states "Handy Manny is an exciting addition to our preschool programming line-up, offering an authentic multicultural perspective, humor, and valuable messages about friendship, community and working together,". "Led by Wilmer Valderrama , Fez on that 70’s show, Order clarinex C.O.D, it is rich with creativity, heart and intelligence. Preschoolers, parents and caregivers the world over are sure to embrace this unique new series."

Disney claims that "Handy Manny" is designed to infuse preschool viewers with the confidence to take on challenges and try to work them out, most notably interpersonal relationships. Playful and filled with humor and quirky, relatable characters, the episodes reinforce core early-learning concepts while also emphasizing pro-social and emotional themes including getting along with friends and family, helping others, and trying one's best.

Disney further claims that,
"Handy Manny" teaches preschoolers simple Spanish words and phrases by putting them into a real-world context - such as Manny saying "abuelito" when referring to his grandfather, Order zocor C.O.D. In addition, the series introduces everyday aspects of Latino culture, including certain holidays and the importance of family. "Handy Manny" will also resonate with young Latino viewers, thanks to its authentic portrayal of culturally-relevant characters and customs.

Now, of course I'm really hoping that this show is able to do all that Disney claims it is capable of doing…time will tell. So let's keep tabs on the show and see how it unfolds. Order zocor C.O.D, From what I've Googled in each episode someone contacts Manny the Handyman to do some repair work at which time Manny formulates a plan of action and gets to work. While doing this work he apparently relies heavily on his helpers, Advair Without A Prescription, a bunch of talking tools. There is Pat a bumbling Hammer, Turner a grumpy screwdriver, Felipe an ambitious screwdriver, Dusty who plays the role of the maternal Saw, Stretch a perfectionist tape measure. Then there is Rusty a fearful Wrench, and Squeeze, a curious pair of pliers.

If you or your kids or kids you know happen to watch the show, here are some things I'm wondering about that may offer you a perspective on viewing the show.

The first thing I'm wondering is whether the show is simply a new take on a long-standing stereotype, Order zocor C.O.D.

I'm also thinking about what it would mean to read or view the show through the lens of an existing show. I'm thinking here in particular about Bob the Builder. If you rub one show up against the other for instance you'll notice that where Manny, a latino character, has a cast of tools that fit into a tool box, Bob, a white character, has a construction company filled with machinery and equipment. Handy Manny’s theme song focuses on the phrase "we'll fix it right" or something close to that while Bob's theme song asks the question "Can we build it"…the reponse being.. Order zocor C.O.D, "Yes We Can".

There is also an interesting comment cross-posted on Vivir Latino and Latin_Know that you could use to read or view the show, soma Overnight. I'll link to these sites on the shownotes.

Here’s what the post says,

Why is that television believes children can get down with Spanish while adults cannot. For whatever reason, prime time TV (with rare exceptions like Freddie Prinze's "Freddie") doesn't want to bother with bilingualism, even though Latinos are a perfect demographic: 600 billion in buying power, median age of 26, average household size of 4 members, yadayadayada...

There's a huge rise in the use of Spanish and bilingual dialogues in mainstream children's television programming, Order zocor C.O.D. We've posted before about Dora La Exploradora, but she's not alone.

But now PBS Kids' has more Latino offerings. ''Dragon Tales'' was revamped last year to highlight Latino issues and include Enrique, an immigrant who is Puerto Rican and Colombian. ''Jay Jay the Jet Plane'' added a new bilingual plane named Lina. Order zocor C.O.D, At a time when Freddy Prinze's dad was the only "bilingual" character on TV, "Sesame Street" was emerging as the only multi-cultural option for children. The same seems to be happening now. Why.

Census 2000 showed that Latino communities are the nation's fastest growing -- and the biggest five-year Latino age group is infants to preschoolers.

Next time you think about how liberating it is that your kids have more Latino cartoons to watch, Buying antabuse, think also about whose dollars they are after: yours via your children. Smarter than targeting you outright, no.

So hopefully I've left you with some tools or perspectives with which to view the show.
