A Celebration of Life _ CLIP 18 Transcript

Intro

Hi, this is show #18 of the Critical Literacy in Practice, CLIP, Podcast.

More and more I’ve been receiving responses from parents and non-school educators regarding various issues and critical literacy practices shared in the show, Discount propecia Without Prescription. I’ve also heard from some of you regarding your own children’s experiences in connection with issues raised in the show. For CLIP 18, I want to sincerely thank Andrea and Mark from Just One More Book and their 7-year old daughter Lucy for being this week’s participants.

A couple of weeks I received an e-mail from Andrea who shared her daughter’s excitement regarding planning a charitable event which she named "The Shakes Festival -- A Celebration of Life". Apparently, she imagined the idea with her friend at school where she created a long and detailed list of scheduled activities making clear her big hopes of raising money for multiple charities. Discount propecia Without Prescription, Andrea wondered what her role ought to be a as a parent commenting that Lucy, often has big ideas like this and although she does ask her about her plans now and then, she doesn’t push her to act on these ideas. She continued “But then they fall away eventually. I think we have the makings of a real force here, I'm just not sure the best way to proceed, Buy cardura C.O.D, lead or follow”.

In response I wrote, I think our roles as parents/caregivers/teachers is to make available to our children/students more powerful discursive practices and ways of being including the kinds of books you read to your girls and the conversations you have about those books. The discussion, the conversation is key...the books alone only go so far. I continued, since, she is actually initiating the planning of the event, and if this is something she is truly passionate about then I would suggest continuing to talk about it and maybe offering her some ways to broach the subject with her teacher who hopefully can support her to do some sort of survey in her class or school to see if there are other kids who are interested in planning such an event, Discount propecia Without Prescription. From there it would be powerful to offer her some tools for taking this social action by sharing with her multi-modal texts such as some of the ones I’ve shared in past shows. I think what she's learning with this kind of activity goes far beyond what any curriculum could offer this is about participating differently in the world which is transformative learning.

A couple of days later, I heard from Mark, who, in the midst of what he referred to as the mad rush to get ready for the school and work day, managed to record Lucy talking about her Shakes Festival idea for all of you to hear. Mark is well known especially in the Canadian Podcasting circle for producing several podcasts, which I will link to in the show-notes. Discount propecia Without Prescription, He said the whole festival is still in its conceptual stages and that according to Lucy, she took the idea to her grade 2 teacher and apparently the entire class is interested in participating. Buy allopurinol C.O.D, Lucy's is hoping to arrange speakers from some charities to come in for the festival.

Audio of Lucy, Mark ,and The Shakes Festival

For now she leaves us with lots to think about in terms of children’s motivations for participation in potentially transformative events like the Shakes Festival. If you listen closely to how she describes this event her motivation for the work becomes clearer. What also becomes clearer is a realization that in order to come up with such a plan that she must be drawing from particular models of previous events or festivals she has come to know. She uses what she knows as tools for shaping her ideas, Discount propecia Without Prescription. Her knowledge of the time and effort it would take to carry out such a plan of events also comes to surface when she talks about assigning roles and responsibilities to others as well as when she lays out a rough timeline for how long this work could take. She further recognizes the need to acknowledged participants for their work and support as she recognizes the need to draw from others if the Shakes Festival is to happen. So I love that this idea is taking shape and moving forward. Hopefully, we’ll hear more from Lucy sometime in the near future.

Thank You To:
Andrea and Mark, of Just One More Book and their daughter Lucy for providing material for this show. Transcript for Body Image and the Media
CLIP #17

Intro

More and more, I have been able to draw from your comments and questions to build or think about themes for CLIP. This certainly is the case for today’s show so I want to thank Karen for sending the e-mail that resulted in this episode, Buying cialis.

Body Image and the Media

In her e-mail Karen wrote, “I just finished listening to Clip 7 and it really hit home with me”. Clip 7 focused on the media and the construction of stereotypes. She then referred to a nine year old female relative who she described as obsessed with images such as Paris Hilton, and so forth, and their body sizes, they way they dress etc. She continued, “The television shows she watches and the websites she visits, all contain skinny blond girls with big breasts, and wearing skimpy clothes and make up, making out with cute boys.... Buying cialis, The scary thing is, these shows and sites are marketed and meant for girls her age. This disturbs me. How can I help her to foster self esteem and realize, that MOST girls/women do not look like this, lasix Pill, nor will they ever, without crossing into territory that her parents should really be dealing with. I don't want to overstep my bounds, but I am concerned about all of this media bombardment. She is already concerned about breast size etc., Her parents don't seem to want to deal with this and when I've mentioned it to them, they just laugh and roll their eyes and think she's a typical "girlie girl".

In response I wrote,
I know what you mean about some young girls' obsession with celebrities like Paris Hilton etc, Buying cialis. It's another form of hero worship. It’s also a demonstration of ‘fandom’ a sub-cultural social network of fans interested in the same celebrity for instance.

I continud, There are some books out there. I'm thinking here of books like the following which focus on strong female characters. Buying cialis, McCully, Emily Arnold. The Bobbin Girl. New York: Dial, 1996.

McCully, Emily Arnold. Mirette and Bellini Cross Niagara Falls. New York: Putnam, 2000, Buying cialis.

Rodriguez, Luis J. America Is her Name. Advair Online Without Prescription, Ilus. By Carlos Vasquez. Buying cialis, Willimantic, CT: Curbstone, 1996.

Fitzgerald, Dawn. Getting in the Game. Roaring Brook Press, 2005.

Sills, Leslie. From Rags to Riches: A History of Girls' Clothing in America, Buying cialis. Holiday House, 2005.

This last book is a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of girls' clothing in America , this overview shows how clothing is closely tied to cultural expectations and gender roles.

Probably the most effective way to offer your nine-year-old relative an alternate perspective is by doing what Sarah suggests in show 7 which is to capitalize on moments when she may say or do something that shows she is buying into the dominant stereotypes of girl/femaleness. And you are right the media bombardment is primarily aimed at teaching young girls to be particular kinds of consumers and to buy into particular ways of doing things and particular ways of being. Buying cialis, Giving young girls tools for resisting this dominant stuff will help them to become much more informed consumers and decision makers in life. Some questions/ statements that you could slip into your conversations with her include,

-do you know any girls who look like that at your school/ in your neighborhood/ in your family etc..
-what do you think these girls are trying to do when they dress like that, what difference does it make, to whom.
-who do you think benefits from selling those kinds of clothes /shoes/ etc.
-what advantage does dressing like Paris Hilton offer.
-what difference would this make for you, Buying cialis.

You could also then point to famous and popular girls/women who achieve hero status without necessarily taking on the 'Barbie Paris Hilton' image, Buy prozac Without A Prescription, such as female Olympians/athletes and people in the community.

Questions and experiences like these could bring some awareness that the 'Barbie look' is only one 'look' that there are many other ways of being and doing. It also may help get at the underlying issue that leads young girls to want to be like Paris or Hilary duff or some other celebrity.

Is it about being popular. Buying cialis, with whom. for what reason. to whom does it matter and why. what are some other ways to be popular without having to buy into the 'Barbie Paris' image. Is it about fear. Of what, Buying cialis. Rejection. From whom.

Hopefully these suggestions will give you a place to start...

Next up a tune by one of my favorite independent artists, Deirdre Flint. Buying cialis, When I decided to put together the previous episode this song immediately came to mind. I hope you enjoy…The Boob Fairy. I’ll catch you next time.

Transcript for Acts of Courage and Acts of Kindness
CLIP #16

Intro

Welcome to CLIP 16 everyone. I'm going to play around with the order of things today so rather than doing acknowledgements and thank you's up front I'll wait till later and jump right into the show. Let me know what you think of this format.

Before I get going though I want to extend a big hello to member of the Toronto Reading Council and folks from OISE with whom I had a wonderful time talking about critical literacy this past weekend. Buy nolvadex Online, Today, I pick up on last week's show and the topic of taking action to change things that are problematic in our communities and beyond. I couldn't get the voices of the children from Selsted Primary out of my head and so spent a number of days imagining what other texts might work nicely with the Save Our School song. So, what I have done is to put together a multi-media text set of children's books and audio that focus on acts of courage and acts of kindness. I really do believe that in combination, Niaspan Without A Prescription, the texts I will share work very well together to enrich and inform discussions and work on the issue of taking action to change inequitable ways of being.

Station ID – Patrick and Catalina

Midtro

Already, you know one piece I would include in today's multi-modal text set is the Save Our School song which as I mentioned is a terrific demonstration of the power of music to shape political and social experiencel. So imagine, then combining this song with a book like Si Se Puede, Yes We Can, a bilingual book about the justice for janitors strike in LA as told from the perspective of a young boy whose mother becomes a leader of the strike, Buy nolvadex Online. Another book that would be a powerful addition would be The Streets are Free by Kurusa and Monika Doppert which is a story based on the experience of children in a low income neighborhood in Venezuela who fought for the right to turn an empty lot into a playground. So it’s about organizing to defend your rights. Another book is Selavi, That's Life which is a true story of Selavi, a street child in Haiti who shares food and a place to sleep with other street children who eventually contributes to opening a home for children and starting Radyo Timoun, Children's Radio, a station run by and for children, which, until March of 2004, was still in operation.

Alongside these books you could include the publication IndyKids which I have talked about previously on the show. Buy nolvadex Online, Since discovering IndyKids I've learned of BabagaNewz, which is a full-color monthly classroom magazine that accurately and thoughtfully analyzes major news stories, religious holidays, cultural events and youth trends that play an important part in our children's lives. This particular magazine focuses each issue around a specific Jewish value. As in the past I will have links to each of these publications and resources in the show notes.

Kids Can Make A Difference® (KIDS), is another great addition to the text set. It is an educational program for middle- and high school students, which focuses on the root causes of hunger and poverty, the people most affected, solutions, Buy lipitor Without A Prescription, and how students can help. The major goal is to stimulate the students to take some definite follow-up actions as they begin to realize that one person can make a difference, Buy nolvadex Online.

Speaking of action, one of Sage Tyrtle’s recent shows on Quirky Nomads focuses on Deamonte Love and schools in Louisiana who are still struggling in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

In hopes of trying to contribute in some way I asked Sage, if she would let me air some audio form her show that very clearly explains what you and I can do to help kids in Louisiana to once again have access to books in their schools and homes since the devastation of the hurricanes.

Sage Tyrtle on Diamonte Love

I have a request for listeners who are either teachers or professors integrating this podcast into their course work or students who are tuning in as a course requirement to please either send me e-mail or voice mail telling me how you are using the show in your setting. I'd love to be able to create a list of ways the show has been used.

Jeff Wood- What Critical Literacy Means to Me Buy nolvadex Online, Before I go I have many people to thank this week. Sage Tyrtle of Quirky Nomads, Pat Thompson, Sarah VZ, charles of Mostly News and Desperate Husbands Podcast, Fran Hughes from Queensland, Australia, jeff wood, from Sudbury Ontario in Canada, Carol Felderman, Laura Mayoral, Annika, Stephanie from Tokyo, and Shelley Peterson… for commenting on the show, Diflucan Overnight, contacting me regarding the show, or pinning my frappr map. Thanks also to Karen for commenting on the Handy Manny episode on show #9. She says her son loves the show and it has in fact become his favorite. Now that the show has been running for several weeks, what do you think. Finally I want to thank Patrick and Catalina for today’s station ID.
