Transcript for Acts Of Kindness And Social Action_CLIP 23
Intro
Hello Everyone. You are listening to show 23 of the CLIP podcast which I would like to dedicate to my friends and colleagues in Hawaii especially those who are connected with Kamehameha Schools. Congratulations again on a favorable court decision regarding the John Doe lawsuit, synthroid Prescription.
Tonight’s show focuses on a powerful text set on acts of kindness and social action submitted by Andrea Ross of Just One More Book, a wonderful podcast and resource on children’s books. The idea for the show resulted from a comment by Andrea on a previous clip episode after which time I encouraged her to send me audio expanding on her thoughts. I’m so pleased she agreed to do the show and I know you will truly enjoy what she has to say as much as I have. I thought it was especially appropriate as we enter the holiday season.

Audio from Andrea Ross Synthroid Prescription, This is Andrea Ross, devoted CLIP listener and one of the children's book fanatics behind the Just One More Book!. Podcast.
More often than not, Vivian's CLIP episodes leave me buzzing with ideas, Buy celexa, inspiration and feeling a bit like I've fallen out in the middle of a lively, engaging conversation. And... more often than not... the result is a long and rambling email to Vivian from me, filling her in on all the thoughts and ideas her show has brought up for me.
A few weeks ago, Vivian decided to cure me of this post-CLIP rambling email habit by suggesting that I put some of those thoughts into a segment for her show, synthroid Prescription. This is my attempt to do that. I think I'm cured.
In CLIP Episode 16, entitled "Acts of Courage and Acts of Kindness", Vivian presented A multi-media text set of children's books and audio exploring the idea that children can make improvements in the world.
This inspiring show brought to mind two fabulous books and two organizations that can help children see the power and possibility of relatively small, tangible gestures.
Beatrice's Goat Synthroid Prescription, , written by Page McBrier and Illustrated by Lori Lohstoeter, tells the true story of a 9 year old Ugandan girl whose life is changed for the better by the gift of a goat. This gorgeous book, with its warm, Order combivir Without A Prescription, earthy illustrations and simple narration effectively illustrates how the education, income and nourishment provided by the goat slowly and steadily improves the health and wellbeing of the entire family -- and eventually ripples outward to neighbouring families. The story is accompanied by a description of the Heifer Organization:
Instead of providing hungry families with a temporary source of food, Heifer International provides a "living loan" of an animal and training in animal care. Each family in turn passes these gifts to another family in need, creating a chain of hope that lifts entire communities.
The second book on this goat-giving theme is "The Goat Lady", by Jane Bregoli. What an amazing book, synthroid Prescription. What an amazing story. Filled with gorgeous grey/blue paintings and a striking example of the power of understanding, this book is too great a masterpiece to do justice here. The relevant point is that the main character of this true story is an elderly Quebecois widow in Massachusetts who raises goats which she eventually gives to the Heifer organization. (As a complete aside: the real Beatrice, Generic tylenol, who is now 20 years old, eventually became a student in northern Massachusetts. Synthroid Prescription, )
To make this whole life enhancing animal gift giving idea even more accessible, a charitable organization called Project Tembo (Tanzania Education and Micro-Business Opportunity) sells donation greeting cards at one of our local independent book stores. Not long after first reading these two books, our girls were each able to buy a chicken for a Tanzanian family. Talk about mixed media.
Showing both sides of the goat-giving story, and in this order, and exploring the Heifer and Project Tembo websites, I believe, really brings the whole gift giving idea to life.

Social Action Text Set & Podcasting_CLIP 22 Partial Transcript
Intro
Aloha, Discount advair. You are listening to show 22 of the CLIP podcast. Tonight’s show is the final installation of a three part series, which was recorded on the beautiful island of Hawaii, at the International Reading Association’s Regional Conference which was held there a few weeks ago. In Today’s show I build on a text set I had started in a previous show as well as talk about Podcasting in general. If you haven’t heard the previous two installations I would urge you to at least listen to Show# 21 prior to listening to tonight’s show. Discount advair, And as the sun sets on my memorable and heart warming experience in Hawaii, I urge you to please visit my blog post regarding supporting Kamehameha Schools.
One thing I hope you can take away from the three part series is the need to always ask ourselves why we’re doing what we’re doing and what literacies are produced through our teaching, as educators, parents, and caregivers, as well as consider how those literacies play out in the real world.
Consequently, we need to think about how our teaching positions our students and children, actonel Online, in particular ways along with understanding the position from which we teach.
Liana Honda Station ID/ Midtro
When this incident took place there weren’t many books available that would support the work we were doing. So I relied primarily on books that created space for talking about issues of social justice, fairness and equity. Nowadays however there are so many wonderful books that can be used to create space for talking about the issues raised by my students in the French Café story, Discount advair.
I’m thinking here of books like Si Se Puede, Yes We Can, a bilingual book about the justice for janitors strike in LA as told from the perspective of a young boy whose mother becomes a leader of the strike or
The Streets are Free by Kurusa and Monika Doppert which is a story based on the experience of children in a low income neighborhood in Venezuela who fought for the right to turn an empty lot into a playground. So it’s about organizing to defend your rights.
Another book is Selavi, That’s Life which is a true story of Selavi, a street child in Haiti who shares food and a place to sleep with other street children who eventually contributes to opening a home for children and starting Radyo Timoun, Children’s Radio, a station run by and for children, which, until March of 2004, was still in operation.
At Radyo Timoun, the questions and suggestions of children were broadcast for all to hear. Discount advair, In March, 2004, however, the station was destroyed in the midst of the incredible unrest in Haiti.
An article appeared in yesterday’s USA Today that would fit nicely with this text set.

Another text that would be a wonderful fit with this already powerful text set is a song performed by a group of Kindergarten to Grade Six children at Selsted Primary School which is located in a small rural community in South-East Kent in the UK. Clarinex Dosage, Selsted was one of 12 schools earmarked for closure because of falling pupil numbers in the county. In protest the children and adults of the school formed The Save Selsted Action Group who then wrote a song to protest its proposed closure. The children were invited to perform their song on a local television broadcast, Discount advair. That’s the image you are seeing. From here the song was picked up by on line audio broadcasters, called podcasters, who spread the word of the children’s plight. An online music store in the UK 7 Digital and The Podsafe Music Network in the US both picked up the song, selling downloads for 99p in the UK and 99cents in the US. These music networks exist specifically for independent artists. Discount advair, Podcasting as a Critical Move
As I introduce the children of Selsted School I will simultaneously share with you a third critical move, namely my attempts at using various forms of technology in connection with my work. Specifically I will introduce the children of selsted to you through sharing an episode from an online radio show or Podcast that I host.
What is a Podcast.
This is how Todd Maffin, the Canadian Podfather describes Podcasting.
He says, "Podcasting" as a web-based broadcast medium. Audio files are made available online in a way that allows software to automatically detect the availability of new files and download the files for listening at the user's convenience, Discount advair.
It is like a free audio magazine subscription: a subscriber receives regular audio programs delivered via the internet, and can listen to them at their leisure. To listen to my show you simply have to go to the web address provided on the handout available through the IRA website.
Podcasts differ from traditional internet audio because they can be listened to at any time since a copy is on the listener's computer or portable music player, and they are automatically delivered to subscribers, so no active downloading is required.
My hope as the show takes hold is to have folks from around the globe participate in some way, Order zoloft. Discount advair, So that the show truly becomes a site for continuously generating spaces for critical literacies in varied settings and for varied purposes.
Why Podcast. And Why we need to capitalize on this technology.
Let me share some statistics in response to these questions.
Researchers at the Diffusion Group recently predicted that the U.S. podcast audience will climb from 840,000 last year to 56 million by 2010, Discount advair.
And what started out as a system for distributing homespun radio programming over the Web has now caught on with big media companies. ABC News, NBC News, ESPN Disney and National Public Radio have all introduced podcast programming in recent months.
Libsyn is a popular podcast host site. According to their data more than 45 million people listened to and watched podcasts off the libsyn network alone in the first quarter of the year. Discount advair, What you will hear is a segment from my online show that is focused on the children of Selsted. I’m playing it here because it provides a good context for your listening of the children’s song.
So there are many more books and multi-media texts to draw from and work with in different ways. Imagine then, the possibilities for working across the curriculum with such rich resources for teaching and learning.
Thank You:

Everyday Texts and Popular Culture _ CLIP19 Transcript
Aloha. CLIP 19 is coming to you from the beautiful island of Hawaii. Thank you so much to Liana Honda for inviting me as a featured speaker at the International Reading Association’s Regional Conference being held here for the next few days.
Intro Order paxil C.O.D, Today I thought I would focus on critical literacy and everyday text and I’d like to dedicate the show to my friends at Hofstra University in Long Island, NY. I had a fantastic weekend talking with them about critical literacy and podcasting. I especially want to thank Denny Taylor for inviting me to work with her and her colleagues who have constructed such a caring and passionate community of scholars. And of course many more thanks are to follow later in the show so keep listening.
I also want to share some news with you. The CLIP podcast was selected by Charles Cadenhead of Mostly News and Desperate Husbands Podcast as the Pick of the Day for Tuesday, November 14 on the Podcast Pickle, a very popular podcast directory, Order paxil C.O.D. Thank you Charles for the honor.

When I use the term everyday texts I am referring to texts that are spoken or written, sung, drawn, painted and so forth… as part of everyday life. Order elavil C.O.D, These texts can be so common that we do not carefully take notice of them. As a result we can be less aware of the kinds of messages about our world ,which they convey. Order paxil C.O.D, Since these texts are not natural representations of the world they can be interrogated, deconstructed, and analyzed to uncover different views of the world they could represent. In doing so we are able to make visible the lifestyles and social identities that are constructed through what is presented and how it is presented creating space for the redesign of such texts.
The everyday text I will focus on is the Fruity Peel-Outs box, which are candy fruit snacks for children. Sheets of sweet, sticky, pliable candy come rolled up in individual packages ready for children’s consumption. The work I will describe was done with a group of pre-school children between the ages of 3 and 5 when one of the children in the group brought a box of Fruity Peel Outs to school. This of course brought immediate interest to others in the group as they began calling out things they noticed on it, Order paxil C.O.D. Capitalizing on this interest and re-calling the work done by Comber and Simpson (1995) on analyzing cereal boxes I asked them to pass the box around and had each child name one thing on it that they noticed. While they did this I kept a list of all the items they mentioned. Andre started. “I spy with my little eye Mickey Mouse!” Rola followed, “I spy with my little eye some fruit!”. Order paxil C.O.D, They continued in this fashion integrating one of their favorite games, ‘I Spy’ into the textual analysis I was attempting. For me this was a reminder of possibilities for the ongoing creation of curricular spaces for critical literacy as we moved back and forth between my capitalizing on their interests in the popular snack, and their capitalizing on the activity I had initiated by integrating, into the naming activity, the game ‘I Spy’.
What is difficult in creating these curricular spaces is resisting over-schooling the children’s topics and co-opting their interests thereby diminishing their pleasure with it. These spaces therefore need to be negotiated carefully with attention paid to the interests of all participants, especially the children.
We continued our activity by talking about what kind of work each piece of information could accomplish and discussing who might want that information and why. Part of what I talked about with the children was the ways in which word and images work together and apart to produce differential effects for the reader, Order paxil C.O.D.
Emily noted, “I want the information about peeling the Mickey Mouse shape”. She continued by saying she liked the peel outs better than other snacks because of the Mickey Mouse shapes in the fruity candy. Miguel suggested that his father would want the fruit because “that’s yucky good for you”. Apparently his father only lets him eat ‘good’ snacks. Order paxil C.O.D, Once we had established that various texts and images are desirable to different groups of people and for different reasons, we continued by talking about how , in particular, the words and images work. We began to unpack the linguistic features on the box analyzing the effects, micardis No Rr, on the reader, of the words, pictures and symbols. I did this with them as one way to begin identifying the cultural values being promoted and presented, for whom and in what ways. For instance in a society that is bombarded with informational text on the nutritional values of food it is no wonder that Miguel is drawn to the ‘health aspect’ of the peel outs.
To do this work I discussed with them what they thought were good ideas and bad ideas for texts and images to be included on the box if they were to be re-designed. Following were some of their responses, Order paxil C.O.D.
Andrei: Andrei thought it would be a good idea to include images of fruit and kids to show that the fruits are good for the kids. He thought it was a bad idea to have anything having to do with dirt or garbage because that isn’t good for kids.
Geoffrey: Geoffrey also thought it would be a good idea to include fruit because his mom would buy them if they were good for him. He thought it would be a bad idea to have a person’s name like “Geoffrey” because then “other kids who aren’t Geoffrey won’t think they should buy it”.
Emily: Order paxil C.O.D, Emily drew her family to represent something good that would make them buy the Peel-Outs. She said “people like to be happy and this is happy”. Emily puts on offer a lifestyle as a conceptual frame for selling fruity peel outs. She referred to her design as “the same as on T.V.” referring to recent television commercials and print ads that portray family and peer activities and people doing enjoyable things together as a concept for selling by using very subtle branding of these products. So clearly, different communicative processes are thrown in the mix.
Miguel: Miguel drew a picture of bees to represent a bad idea stating, “If you are allergic then aha – you’ll be scared to death to buy this”, Order paxil C.O.D. He also puts on offer a particular lifestyle that promotes well-being and safety.
I’ve included images of the children’s drawings on the CLIP homepage if you’d like to take a look.
Hilary Janks (1993) notes, that identifying discourses, which are at work in texts, is an important part of reading critically and interrogating texts. Already, the children through their selections of good and bad ideas are making visible the discursive life styles (namely health, safety, and happiness) or ways of being that would lead someone, in particular adults in their lives , Buy augmentin C.O.D, to buy or not buy the Peel-Outs. Order paxil C.O.D, Following this we talked about how language works on consumers, such as themselves. We discussed how words, images, and symbols on the food packaging work to position the ‘buyer’ of the product as a believer, someone who puts faith in what the product claims to deliver. In doing so we touched on the feelings and emotions that are encouraged and promoted through combinations of words and images. We also discussed the notion of temptation and how consumers might be tempted to buy particular products or goods and the role that such elements as font style or color might play.
Having done some deconstructive work we turned our attention to re-designing and creating our own versions of the Peel-Out boxes. To do this I gave the children the option of using a black-line representing the front section of the box, Order paxil C.O.D.
The children then took their collection of good ideas and used them to re-design the Peel Out Box. Following this they considered in what ways words they choose would or would not help sell the product. Emily felt that words would not be helpful if it was on the box but words would be helpful in a television commercial. Without hesitation the children stood from their chairs and began acting out their good ideas. Order paxil C.O.D, While acting out their ideas we talked about the use of music and what kind of music would work or not work – how loud or how soft it should be and why, along with what effect different kinds of music would have on the viewer and on selling the products. More and more learning was generated as we further deconstructed the Fruity Peel-Outs box looking at other areas of the curriculum and talking in the language of science or math from a critical literacy perspective.
We also went online to take a look at the website of the company that manufactures the Fruity Peel Outs. While on the site we discovered a comments page. Deciding on whether or not to submit a comment resulted in another flurry of discussion and activity where the children debated over what to say in their comment. During this debate we talked about how the size of the comment box limits what you can say in terms of the number of words you can use as well as the communication system through which to convey your message, Order paxil C.O.D. Specifically the children talked about how it would take ‘so many words’ to have to explain the designs they created and that having such a small box to submit their comments was very limiting.
So imagine the potential, the learning, and the literacies that were constructed. Certainly not the kind of literacies that stems from mandated prescriptive literacy programs. Also imagine how much more accessible a curriculum that incorporates the use of everyday text and print would be for a linguistically and culturally diverse group of learners. One of the advantages of using popular culture everyday print is that the texts used can and should be negotiated with the children based on what is interesting and intriguing to them and using textual materials available in their lives.
Thank You

CLIP #17
Intro
More and more, I have been able to draw from your comments and questions to build or think about themes for CLIP. This certainly is the case for today’s show so I want to thank Karen for sending the e-mail that resulted in this episode, Buying cialis.

Body Image and the Media
In her e-mail Karen wrote, “I just finished listening to Clip 7 and it really hit home with me”. Clip 7 focused on the media and the construction of stereotypes. She then referred to a nine year old female relative who she described as obsessed with images such as Paris Hilton, and so forth, and their body sizes, they way they dress etc. She continued, “The television shows she watches and the websites she visits, all contain skinny blond girls with big breasts, and wearing skimpy clothes and make up, making out with cute boys.... Buying cialis, The scary thing is, these shows and sites are marketed and meant for girls her age. This disturbs me. How can I help her to foster self esteem and realize, that MOST girls/women do not look like this, lasix Pill, nor will they ever, without crossing into territory that her parents should really be dealing with. I don't want to overstep my bounds, but I am concerned about all of this media bombardment. She is already concerned about breast size etc., Her parents don't seem to want to deal with this and when I've mentioned it to them, they just laugh and roll their eyes and think she's a typical "girlie girl".
In response I wrote,
I know what you mean about some young girls' obsession with celebrities like Paris Hilton etc, Buying cialis. It's another form of hero worship. It’s also a demonstration of ‘fandom’ a sub-cultural social network of fans interested in the same celebrity for instance.
I continud, There are some books out there. I'm thinking here of books like the following which focus on strong female characters. Buying cialis, McCully, Emily Arnold. The Bobbin Girl. New York: Dial, 1996.
McCully, Emily Arnold. Mirette and Bellini Cross Niagara Falls. New York: Putnam, 2000, Buying cialis.
Rodriguez, Luis J. America Is her Name. Advair Online Without Prescription, Ilus. By Carlos Vasquez. Buying cialis, Willimantic, CT: Curbstone, 1996.
Fitzgerald, Dawn. Getting in the Game. Roaring Brook Press, 2005.
Sills, Leslie. From Rags to Riches: A History of Girls' Clothing in America, Buying cialis. Holiday House, 2005.
This last book is a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of girls' clothing in America , this overview shows how clothing is closely tied to cultural expectations and gender roles.
Probably the most effective way to offer your nine-year-old relative an alternate perspective is by doing what Sarah suggests in show 7 which is to capitalize on moments when she may say or do something that shows she is buying into the dominant stereotypes of girl/femaleness. And you are right the media bombardment is primarily aimed at teaching young girls to be particular kinds of consumers and to buy into particular ways of doing things and particular ways of being. Buying cialis, Giving young girls tools for resisting this dominant stuff will help them to become much more informed consumers and decision makers in life. Some questions/ statements that you could slip into your conversations with her include,
-do you know any girls who look like that at your school/ in your neighborhood/ in your family etc..
-what do you think these girls are trying to do when they dress like that, what difference does it make, to whom.
-who do you think benefits from selling those kinds of clothes /shoes/ etc.
-what advantage does dressing like Paris Hilton offer.
-what difference would this make for you, Buying cialis.
You could also then point to famous and popular girls/women who achieve hero status without necessarily taking on the 'Barbie Paris Hilton' image, Buy prozac Without A Prescription, such as female Olympians/athletes and people in the community.
Questions and experiences like these could bring some awareness that the 'Barbie look' is only one 'look' that there are many other ways of being and doing. It also may help get at the underlying issue that leads young girls to want to be like Paris or Hilary duff or some other celebrity.
Is it about being popular. Buying cialis, with whom. for what reason. to whom does it matter and why. what are some other ways to be popular without having to buy into the 'Barbie Paris' image. Is it about fear. Of what, Buying cialis. Rejection. From whom.
Hopefully these suggestions will give you a place to start...
