Andy, my partner and I recently took our 4 year old to Disneyland for somewhat of a family reunion and it was great to meet up with our relatives from the West Coast. To Disney or not to Disney, I know is a question many people have struggled over. Elavil Online Without Prescription, Here’s what I think. The perspective from which you enter into any event or experience makes a difference in what you come away with, tylenol No Rr. Not going to Disneyland in and of itself is not critical literacy. The critical piece comes through being able to unpack the hidden ideologies that stem from the world of Disney and therefore not buying into those ideologies. The critical also comes through understanding the position from which you enter into readings of Disney and so forth. It comes from the recognition that the language you encounter is not natural or neutral and that it does particular life work. Tylenol No Rr, Disney background noise…

Andy – Did you hear that.
Vivian – What .
Andy – That woman over there with her daughter dressed as Cinderella just said “Will you hurry up…you’re not being very princess-like”

Now see what is problematic about what Andy overheard while we were in Disneyland, Order noroxin Overnight Delivery, is the way the woman, caregiver, mother, positioned Disney as an authority on life or the way things should be. Specifically the way girls should be. Advair No Prescription, Disney of course cuts up the world in a particular way.

I doubt, however, if staying away from Disneyland would have disrupted that mother’s problematic representation of what it means to be a girl, tylenol No Rr. So the issue at hand goes beyond to Disney or not to Disney. What do you think. What are some things we can do in schools and at home to disrupt dominant sexist ideologies and discursive practices. Weigh in by leaving a comment on the clip homepage at www.clippodcast.com or by leaving me voice mail at the number listed in the show notes.

To wrap up tonight’s episode, here is Deirdre Flint and Epcot USA, Purchase seroquel.

Epcot USA song…
That was Deirdre Flint and Epcot USA. I hope that Deirdre and I have given you at least a couple of things to think about from a critical literacy perspective.

Until next time…

Transcript for Childhood Revisited _ CLIP 27

Intro

Hi There. As promised here I am with show 27 of the CLIP Podcast, claritin Side Effects. Thank you for coming back to listen to the show. Nasonex Prescription, I received quite a bit of really thoughtful feedback from the past two shows that I decided to create this show based on that feedback. Next week I’ll be airing an interview with Heather Jopling, author of some very thoughtful and thought-provoking texts such as The Not So Only Child and Ryan’s Mom is Tall.

Before I get on with this week’s show I want to share with you what I believe to be a wonderful compliment and honor that I found out about just before recording this show. Claritin Side Effects, Mark Blevis in his blog at www.markblevis.com included me in his list of top 10 most underrated podcasts. It was such a terrific surprise. Mark is the host of Elecric Sky and co-host of Just One More Book, a podcast that I talk about frequently on CLIP. He also co-hosts the Canadian Podcast Buffet, a show that sustains and nurtures the Canadian Podcasting community. So he is a respected leader in the field and I want to publicly thank you Mark for honoring me and CLIP by including me in your top ten list especially given the other names already on the list.

Audio from Carol Felderman

Thank you very much to Carol Felderman for sending that audio, claritin Side Effects. What is most interesting to me regarding her thoughts are her reflections on her own childhood recalling how she and her brother also participated as consumers of Mcdonalds happy meals. In this case I think what critical literacy has afforded us is a way of talking about some issues and instances of living from a different perspective. I was also very interested in her comment regarding the relationship between power and the happy meal toys, zanaflex Without A Prescription, which her students use as tools for positioning themselves within the classroom community. In a sense these happy meal toys represent a form of cultural capital in their particular setting. Claritin Side Effects, Station id

Anna Sumida was inspired by the Happy Meal conversation that she now wants to raise some issues regarding the Happy Meal with students with whom she works to hear what they’d have to say.

Charles Cadenhead, who has a young son and daughter, commented that he finds the girls toys in general to be of a more supportive and cooperative nature than the boy toys which are usually associate with themes of war, fighting and competition.

Andrea who has two young daughters shared a funny story. She said while buzzing around the kitchen in a world of her own, trying to navigate her other 3 house-mates, she noticed her younger daughter Bayla had stopped emptying her lunch bag and was trying repeatedly to tell her something. Andrea finally realized what she was saying “Mom, Cardura No Rr, there’s a bad word on this spoon” (the disposable spoon she had had in her lunch bag). She stopped buzzing and focused on the hard-to-read raised lettering on the black take-out spoon which read “McDonalds”, claritin Side Effects. She says it cracked her up noting “I guess she knows how “we” think!”

Ross of Dry Shave who has a young son, also had a gendered experience with regards to the Happy Meal which he talked about in one of the episodes on his show.

Why are these comments interesting and important to me. Because whether we choose to believe it or not, according to Carmen Luke, although children are not direct income earners, they are in charge of more pocket money than in the past, and they also exert significant power over parental purchase choices so helping them to learn about being informed consumers really does matter.

Partial Transcript for CLIP 25

Intro

Hello Everyone. You are listening to show 25 of the CLIP podcast dedicated to Carol Felderman and her 2nd graders at Bailey’s Elementary School in Falls Church Virginia.

Before I go any further I want to share with you that CLIP has been nominated for the Podcast Peer Awards in the Education category and I want to sincerely thank all of you who voted for me originally but who as a result of some unfortunate circumstances which I’ll talk about in a subsequent show, No Prescription zyprexa, actually had to go in and re-cast your votes. I’m not a big awards person but I’m very honored to have been nominated and I feel so validated to see you all voting for me, Generic allegra. So thank you so much.

Tonight’s show focuses on an instance of learning in a kindergarten classroom where a group of children worked on interrogating, disrupting and analyzing the discourses associated with the McDonald’s Happy Meal. Did you know by the way that McDonald’s is now podcasting. Generic clozapine, The series of podcasts is titled “The McDonald’s You Don’t Know”. Generic allegra, It’s claim is to , and I quote, “share the real story of McDonald's”. The one that I viewed called “Moms and McDonald’s” included 10 women from 7 countries who were called upon by McDonald’s to form a global mom’s panel which in the videocast is referred to as an international think tank representing the pulse of what mom’s are asking for. Isn’t that interesting. Hmm….what do you all think of that. There’s really not that much of a change. It’s still hamburgers and chicken nuggets that are central to the happy meal so let’s keep an eye on the effect of this international think tank.

Transcript for Acts Of Kindness And Social Action_CLIP 23

Intro

Hello Everyone. You are listening to show 23 of the CLIP podcast which I would like to dedicate to my friends and colleagues in Hawaii especially those who are connected with Kamehameha Schools. Congratulations again on a favorable court decision regarding the John Doe lawsuit, synthroid Prescription.

Tonight’s show focuses on a powerful text set on acts of kindness and social action submitted by Andrea Ross of Just One More Book, a wonderful podcast and resource on children’s books. The idea for the show resulted from a comment by Andrea on a previous clip episode after which time I encouraged her to send me audio expanding on her thoughts. I’m so pleased she agreed to do the show and I know you will truly enjoy what she has to say as much as I have. I thought it was especially appropriate as we enter the holiday season.

Audio from Andrea Ross Synthroid Prescription, This is Andrea Ross, devoted CLIP listener and one of the children's book fanatics behind the Just One More Book!. Podcast.

More often than not, Vivian's CLIP episodes leave me buzzing with ideas, Buy celexa, inspiration and feeling a bit like I've fallen out in the middle of a lively, engaging conversation. And... more often than not... the result is a long and rambling email to Vivian from me, filling her in on all the thoughts and ideas her show has brought up for me.

A few weeks ago, Vivian decided to cure me of this post-CLIP rambling email habit by suggesting that I put some of those thoughts into a segment for her show, synthroid Prescription. This is my attempt to do that. I think I'm cured.

In CLIP Episode 16, entitled "Acts of Courage and Acts of Kindness", Vivian presented A multi-media text set of children's books and audio exploring the idea that children can make improvements in the world.

This inspiring show brought to mind two fabulous books and two organizations that can help children see the power and possibility of relatively small, tangible gestures.

Beatrice's Goat Synthroid Prescription, , written by Page McBrier and Illustrated by Lori Lohstoeter, tells the true story of a 9 year old Ugandan girl whose life is changed for the better by the gift of a goat. This gorgeous book, with its warm, Order combivir Without A Prescription, earthy illustrations and simple narration effectively illustrates how the education, income and nourishment provided by the goat slowly and steadily improves the health and wellbeing of the entire family -- and eventually ripples outward to neighbouring families. The story is accompanied by a description of the Heifer Organization:

Instead of providing hungry families with a temporary source of food, Heifer International provides a "living loan" of an animal and training in animal care. Each family in turn passes these gifts to another family in need, creating a chain of hope that lifts entire communities.

The second book on this goat-giving theme is "The Goat Lady", by Jane Bregoli. What an amazing book, synthroid Prescription. What an amazing story. Filled with gorgeous grey/blue paintings and a striking example of the power of understanding, this book is too great a masterpiece to do justice here. The relevant point is that the main character of this true story is an elderly Quebecois widow in Massachusetts who raises goats which she eventually gives to the Heifer organization. (As a complete aside: the real Beatrice, Generic tylenol, who is now 20 years old, eventually became a student in northern Massachusetts. Synthroid Prescription, )

To make this whole life enhancing animal gift giving idea even more accessible, a charitable organization called Project Tembo (Tanzania Education and Micro-Business Opportunity) sells donation greeting cards at one of our local independent book stores. Not long after first reading these two books, our girls were each able to buy a chicken for a Tanzanian family. Talk about mixed media.

Showing both sides of the goat-giving story, and in this order, and exploring the Heifer and Project Tembo websites, I believe, really brings the whole gift giving idea to life.

For the CLIP podcast, I'm Andrea Ross -- in a closet in Canada.

The next several weeks will be very busy for me as we prepare for the arrival of family and friends to celebrate the holidays so I’ll be taking a short break until January 8th 2007. Until then Happy Holidays and I’ll catch you in the new year.
