A friend and colleague, Peter Johnston, in a book he wrote on 'choice words' talks about how we arrange the discursive (ways of being and talking) histories from which our children speak. That is so true. As we construct and choose the words we use, we simultaneously position our children in particular ways making accessible to them certain ways of talking and certain ways of being. That's why it's so amazing to listen and think about what our children are saying because what they say often teaches us about ourselves. Lucy's Shakes Festival , which I'm excited about working on for next week's show, is a great example of how you, as a parent have made accessible the discourse of reaching out to others and making a difference in the world.
