<description>I appreciate your quote, “Barbie is only one way to look. There are many other ways of being and doing.” I feel this message conveys a specific value that is often ignored in our society. Media often portrays a single and correct way of being. Buying into this marketing model is extremely harmful. You prove this by analyzing the dominant female stereotypes that some young girls buy into almost every moment. The questions that you suggest are child friendly and can help motivate young girls to critically analyze the choices they make.

		<description>Hi Carol,
The Dove video in combination with the blog Andy suggested, Andrea's comments and Karen's story make up yet another terrific multi-modal text set...I'll have to keep building on this.

Great find Carol!</description>

		<description>Hi,

I always enjoyed getting a closer look at this topic especially because of my past work with research on girls and their development (Pipher and Gilligan especially). I can\'t remember if I gave you this link, but I think I told you about the work that Dove is doing to demonstrate what girls want to live up to, but truly how it is done.

Check this out:

You\'re great. And I love that the podcasting is spreading. I need to go read the article Andy wrote in!

Chat soon,

		<description>Hi Andrea.
Thank you for the thoughtful comment and the compliment(s) too! A friend and colleague, Peter Johnston, in a book he wrote on 'choice words' talks about how we arrange the discursive (ways of being and talking) histories from which our children speak. That is so true. As we construct and choose the words we use, we simultaneously position our children in particular ways making accessible to them certain ways of talking and certain ways of being. That's why it's so amazing to listen and think about what our children are saying because what they say often teaches us about ourselves.

Lucy's Shakes Festival , which I'm excited about working on for next week's show, is a great example of how you, as a parent have made accessible the discourse of reaching out to others and making a difference in the world.

I'm glad you have continued to enjoy the show!!! It continues to be a lot of fun to put together especially now that I am able to build on and build from listener input :-)

Hugs

		<description>Oh Vivian!

Another fabulous thought-provoking show! Thank you.
Thank you too for all the fabulously productive questions you provided.. You are amazing -- how lucky for the children in your life.

I wanted to mention an obvious point that many adults, based on my experience, completely forget. We adults need to use our words wisely around young ears. In the seven years I have been a parent I have been stunned over and over again by the sloppiness of mothers, especially, in their casual and constant criticism of their own bodies (and other aspects of themselves) with absolutely no regard for the little listeners.

Believe it or not, I am not a person who corrects or contradicts people if at all possible, but many times I have quickly shot a finger to my lips and motioned toward a little person when a mother started into this in front of a child. It's shocking how confused the other mother looks when this happens. They don't seem to have any idea why it might not be a great idea to cut themselves up in front of her (or my) daughter. I find this sad.

Ok. This turned out to be a depressiong comment.

		<description>Hi Vivian,

Great show as always...how can you miss with a song about boobs!

I was reading the Washington Post Express this morning which has a section devoted to local bloggers. This morning was an excerpt from a blog that talked about the very points raised in this weeks show. Here's a link to the blog post.
