I think what you are saying is right on. It’s not about telling kids what to think but giving them lots of material to think about , and different ways of thinking about them ,so that they can make informed decisions. This isn’t just a book skill but an important life skill really.

Another great, thought-provoking episode. Of course, I have tonnes of thoughts on Jerry’s observations re: children’s books but I will try to pick just a couple to mention here (it’s SO hard for me to contain myself!):

I was so anti-fairy tale/traditional tale of any kind when we started out as parents that I remember very clearly when my elder daughter was told her first fairy tale. She was 2.5 yrs old and a friend told her the Goldilocks tale. I remember so vividly because I had sheltered her so completely that, although we read to her constantly, this was a wild new story to her and she was completely intrigued! Eventually, I realized that the key for me was to give her a huge quantity and huge variety of storylines and perspectives so that traditional and fairy tales became just a few of the many millions of ways of looking at the world. Now we have dozens each of variations on most of the traditional fairy tales and I think our girls can tell by the slicing and dicing and scrambling that stories are stories and we can do with them as we please. Oh no!!, I’ve rambled on too long already! so many more thoughts on this….. Maybe this is a JOMB episode..

What a great compliment! Thank you. Actually I’ll be giving a talk in Toronto in October sometime. Your girls are fortunate to have two parents so interested in literacy and excited about books!!!
