    Hey Vivian!

It’s great to be learning about Critical Literacy. I wish you’d started this Podcast seven years ago. :) Any chance you’ll be speaking in our neck of the woods… or moving your classroom to our neighbourhood???

    Looking forward to episode 5,
    Mark

    Hi Mark,

What a great compliment! Thank you. Actually I’ll be giving a talk in Toronto in October sometime. Your girls are fortunate to have two parents so interested in literacy and excited about books!!!

Andrea was saying you were sharing earbuds on your walk today…I had to laugh as I pictured that image in my mind :-)

Thanks again for an amazing PAB experience! Can’t wait for more PAB and more books!!!

    Hi Vivian,

Another great, thought-provoking episode. Of course, I have tonnes of thoughts on Jerry’s observations re: children’s books but I will try to pick just a couple to mention here (it’s SO hard for me to contain myself!):

I was so anti-fairy tale/traditional tale of any kind when we started out as parents that I remember very clearly when my elder daughter was told her first fairy tale. She was 2.5 yrs old and a friend told her the Goldilocks tale. I remember so vividly because I had sheltered her so completely that, although we read to her constantly, this was a wild new story to her and she was completely intrigued! Eventually, I realized that the key for me was to give her a huge quantity and huge variety of storylines and perspectives so that traditional and fairy tales became just a few of the many millions of ways of looking at the world. Now we have dozens each of variations on most of the traditional fairy tales and I think our girls can tell by the slicing and dicing and scrambling that stories are stories and we can do with them as we please. Oh no!!, I’ve rambled on too long already! so many more thoughts on this….. Maybe this is a JOMB episode..

Thanks again for the great show. It turns my wheels,
    Andrea

Thank you Andrea! We should do a crossover show at some point where I use the book you talk about to build a text set similar to what I did in show #3. That would be a hoot.

I think what you are saying is right on. It’s not about telling kids what to think but giving them lots of material to think about , and different ways of thinking about them ,so that they can make informed decisions. This isn’t just a book skill but an important life skill really. :-)

I think your comments would make a terrific JOMB episode! Not rambling at all!

Hi to Mark! iTunes seemed to work fine for updating my JOMB shows this morning by the way.

Aside to other listeners: Andrea co-hosts (JOMB) Just One More Book, a very enjoyable podcast on children’s literature. The show is at http://www.justonemorebook.com Go have a listen and hear a mom and dad talking about their enjoyment of books and reflecting on their children’s responses to those books.

Thanks Andrea! Looking forward to the next JOMB episode! :-)
